BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University women's soccer head coach Andy Richards has announced the team's schedule for the 2005 season. The Falcons are slated to play a total of 19 regular-season matches, including eight at Cochrane Field. BGSU's first two contests of the season will be at home.
Highlights of the Falcons' home schedule include a matchup of 2004 NCAA Championships participants when Eastern Illinois comes to town on Sept. 11, as well as a four-match Mid-American Conference homestand in October.
The Brown and Orange will open the season with a pair of home matches in late August, vs. Oakland (Aug. 26) and Wright State (Aug. 28). Then, BG will head to Flagstaff, Ariz., for a pair of contests in a tournament hosted by Northern Arizona. The Falcons will meet the host school (Sept. 2) along with Boise State (Sept. 4) in that tourney.
A pair of road matches vs. Big Ten Conference schools bookend a two-match home swing as the Falcons conclude the non-league schedule. BGSU will head to Michigan State (Sept. 9) before hosting EIU two days later. Then, the Falcons will meet Cleveland State at Cochrane Field (Sept. 16) before closing non-conference play with a Sept. 18 match at Indiana.
The 11-match Mid-American Conference schedule begins with a weekend trip in late September, as the Falcons face Northern Illinois (Sept. 23) and Western Michigan (Sept. 25). The next weekend, BG will face Ball State (Sept. 30) and Miami (Oct. 2) as league play continues.
The NIU match marks the latest conference opener in the history of the program (the team's opening MAC match in both 1998 and 2004 came on Sept. 17).
BGSU's four home MAC matches all come as part of a four-match homestand, in mid-October. The Falcons host Ohio (Oct. 7), Akron (Oct. 9), Kent State (Oct. 14) and Buffalo (Oct. 16), with the UB match also marking "Senior Day" at Cochrane Field.
The Falcons then head north, facing Central Michigan (Oct. 21) -- in a rematch of last year's MAC Tournament championship -- and Eastern Michigan (Oct. 23). For the second-straight year, BGSU concludes MAC regular-season play with a road match vs. arch-rival Toledo (Oct. 28). The 2005 match comes one year to the day after BG's 2004 win over the Rockets, a 3-0 victory that clinched a MAC Tournament berth. The Falcons, of course, went on to win the '04 league tourney.
The 2005 MAC Tournament begins with quarterfinal-round matches at campus sites on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The four survivors from that day's play will converge on the site of the highest-remaining seed for the semifinals on Nov. 4 and the championship on Nov. 6. The MAC Tournament winner earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
The Falcons posted an overall record of 10-12-2 in 2004, including a 5-5-2 mark in MAC play. The Falcons, seeded eighth for the league tournament, won the title and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in school history. BGSU's MAC Tournament championship-game appearance was the team's third in Richards' five years.
