CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University freshman Allison Vallas has been named a Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday (May 2). Vallas earns the honor for the first time in her Falcon career.
Vallas, a native of Perrysburg, Ohio (Perrysburg HS), hit a team-high .333 last week, including a BG-best .444 average in the Falcons' three MAC games. She was 4-for-9 with a double and three runs batted in, as the Falcons swept visiting Buffalo in a three-game weekend series.
Vallas had walk-off hits in both games of Saturday's (April 30) doubleheader, driving in sophomore Kari Steigerwald with the game's lone run in a 1-0, eight-inning win, before capping the second game with a two-run double to give BG a run-rule victory.
The next day, Vallas scored what would prove to be the winning run in BGSU's 2-1 victory, completing the series sweep.
On the season, Vallas is hitting .282, good for third on the team, and is second on the team with 30 RBI. She ranks fifth in the MAC in the latter category.
In MAC games only, the freshman is hitting .310, and is tied for the team lead with 14 RBI. She is tied for second in the MAC in that category, and ranks 13th in the league in batting average in conference games.
Vallas shared the league's West Division player-of-the-week honor with Ball State's Kelli Jeziorski. Central Michigan's Jill DeRoche claimed divisional pitcher-of-the-week honors, while the Marshall duo of Rachel Folden and Randi Nielsen were named the player and pitcher of the week, respectively, in the East Division.
The Falcons are 26-26 overall and 11-8 in MAC play. BGSU heads to Central Michigan for a three-game series this weekend (May 7-8) to close the regular season. Then, BGSU will travel to Akron for the MAC Tournament, which will be held May 11-14 at Firestone Stadium.
