Oxford, Ohio - Miami broke open a 2-1 contest with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and went on to a 6-1 victory over visiting Bowling Green on Saturday. The Falcons' lone run came in the sixth inning.
Miami took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Ryne Robinson hit a one-out triple to left centerfield and scored on an infield single by Brandon Hillier.
BGSU sent the minimum three batters to the plate in three of the first five innings with the farthest Falcon baserunner reaching second base in the first and fifth innings. In the sixth frame, BGSU had a pair of runners on base after Josh Stewart hit a one-out single and Nolan Reimold was intentionally walked with two outs. Sophomore Kurt Wells took advantage of the situation with a single to left field, scoring Stewart to knot the game, 1-1.
The last time Graham Taylor had given up an earned run was in the third inning on April 16 vs. Buffalo, covering a span of 14.1 innings.
MU retook the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI-single via Jason Brown to left field, scoring Brian Canada. A potential third run for Miami was negated later in the inning when Wells threw out Jon Franzese at home plate trying to score from second base on an Eric Radley single.
In the bottom of the seventh inning the Redhawks threatened again, loading the bases with one out. Keith Lauhlin walked MU's Paul Frietch for a 3-1 Falcon deficit. That prompted a pitching change to closer Matt Hundley and BGSU skipper Danny Schmitz being tossed from the game. Geoff Orr kept the Redhawk rally going with a fielder's choice to Jimmy Lipari at shortstop, scoring John Slone for a 4-1 MU lead. The Redhawks added one last run, 5-1, when Canada scored from third base as Orr got caught in a rundown between first and second base.
MU added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning for the final 6-1 verdict.
BGSU mustered only five hits compared to MU's nine base hits. Both teams had a pair of errors. Laughlin (2-4) suffered the loss, lasting 6.1 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. He walked six and struck out two. MU's Taylor (4-0) went the distance, allowing just one run on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
BGSU drops to 27-13 overall and 8-6 in the MAC. MU improves to 30-13 overall and 11-3 in the MAC. The two teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday, Mother's Day, at 1 p.m. in Oxford.
