Oxford, Ohio - Miami scored five unanswered runs following a 1-0 Bowling Green lead to down the Falcons on Mother's Day in Oxford, 5-1. The Redhawks scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings and added another run in the eighth inning.
Both starters pitched shutout baseball through the first four innings. Miami hurler John Ely struck out the side in the top of the first inning while BGSU's Kyle Knoblauch got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first inning, getting Paul Frietch to ground into a double play to end the inning.
The Falcons were in business in the fourth inning when senior Andy Hudak led off with a walk and junior Nolan Reimold followed with his second single of the game, this time to centerfield. A sacrifice bunt by Kurt Wells moved runners to second and third base. However, Jeff Warnock tapped a dribbler towards the pitcher, who promptly tossed to catcher John Slone, tagging out Hudak on a close play at the plate. Jimmy Lipari then flew out to left field to end the Falcon scoring opportunity.
BGSU finally broke into the scoring column in the fifth inning. Kevin Longstreth reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a single by Eric Lawson. After a double steal put runners on second and third base, Josh Stewart hit a fielder's choice to the Miami third baseman, who tried to throw out Longstreth at home. The senior slid under the tag of MU's Slone to give BGSU a 1-0 lead. The Falcons could get no more, though, as Hudak struck out and Stewart was thrown out in a steal attempt on the same play.
After Ryne Robinson led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single for Miami, there was a 15-minute delay when home plate umpire Scott Weaver had to leave the game due to dizziness. When play resumed, Brian Hillier grounded out to Hudak, but then Slone hit a two-run home run to left field, giving Miami a 2-1 lead.
Miami built its lead to 4-1 with a pair of runs in the sixth inning that scored when an errant pickoff throw by Knoblauch to third base sailed down the left-field line, scoring Jason Brown from third base and Eric Radley from second base. Senior Matt Hundley entered in relief of Knoblauch with two outs in the sixth inning.
The Redhawks then added another run in the eighth inning thanks to two consecutive wild pitches by Hundley, allowing Evan Armitage to score for a 5-1 lead.
Knoblauch (0-3) suffered the loss, despite having his longest outing of the season, going 5.2 innings. He allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Hundley pitched the final 2.1 innings of the game, surrendering one run on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Josh Stewart's career-best hitting streak came to an end at 11 games after going 0-for-4 on Sunday. He has now hit safely in 16 of his last 18 games. Nolan Reimold went 3-for-4 with three singles while Eric Lawson was 2-for-4 with a double.
Ely (7-1) went the distance for Miami, allowing eight hits and one run. He struck out nine and walked one.
BGSU drops to 27-14 overall and 8-7 in the MAC. Miami improves to 31-13 overall and 12-3 in the MAC.
BGSU hosts Wright State on Wednesday, May 11, in a 3 p.m. contest at Warren Steller Field. The Falcons will host Toledo in their final home series this season at Steller Field, May 13-15.
