BGSU begin Saturday with a showdown against Georgia Southern (6-3). The Eagles are led by Iulia Porumbescu and her 5.15 kills per game. Georgia Southern returns five starters from their Southern Conference (13-3) runner-up team in 2004.
The Falcons will wrap up their weekend with a battle against the Wildcats of Weber State. Shelby Walford has helped the Wildcats to a 4-3 record by averaging 11.72 assists per game.
A Look Back at the BGSU Invitational
Head Coach Denise Van De Walle earned win number 400 Friday night against Chicago State in impressive fashion, clobbering the Cougars in a 3-0 sweep. The Falcons were sensational on both sides of the net, hitting for a .358 percentage while holding Chicago State to a -.010 percentage for the match. Freshman Meghan Mohr led the Brown and Orange in kills for the fifth time in six contests, recording 12 kills with a .611 hitting percentage. Bowling Green totaled eight service aces, led by senior Emily Manser with three.
Defense was the key for BGSU in the East Carolina win, holding the Pirates to a .095 hitting percentage. The Falcons racked up 13 blocks and 78 digs as well. Mohr led the Falcon attack with 16 kills and a .343 hitting percentage. Redshirt sophomore Corrie Mills also contributed 11 kills to the winning effort to go along with her eight blocks against the Pirates.
The win over East Carolina set up a Saturday night showdown against Ohio State, with the winner taking home the 2005 BGSU Invitational championship. The Falcons came out flat, dropping the first two games. However, the Brown and Orange came out of the locker room with a mission. The Falcons stormed back to force a game five against the nationally-ranked Buckeyes. Even with all the momentum heading into the fifth and final game, the Falcons suffered a heart-breaking 15-9 loss. Junior Chrissy Gothke was the star for the Falcons, compiling three kills, two blocks and 11 assists.
Gothke and Mohr were named to the All-BGSU Invitational team. Mohr piled up 37 kills over the weekend, while Gothke recorded 110 assists and swatted 22 kills.
Race For 1,000
Senior Emily Manser and junior Chrissy Gothke have the opportunity to accomplish something very special this season. Manser has recorded 842 digs for her career in the Brown and Orange, while Gothke has posted 931 digs in her Falcons career. If the pair of Falcons were to both reach 1,000 digs during the 2005 campaign they would become only the second duo to accomplish the feat in the same season after Tammy Schiller and Lisa Mika both surpassed 1,000 digs in 1991.
Falcons Narrowing in on More Milestones
Sophomore Stephanie Swiger has 95 blocks in her career, just five shy of reaching the 100-block plateau. Senior Emily Manser has 480 career kills with a chance to record her 500th kill over the weekend.
