BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -
The Bowling Green State University volleyball team split their first two matches of the season at the UIC Invitational, bouncing back from a loss to Denver with an exciting five-game victory over host UIC. With the win, Coach Denise Van De Walle is just two wins shy of capturing 400 career wins.
The Falcons led most of game one, gathering the 30-27 win.
Extra points were needed to decide game two. Back-to-back kills by the Flames handed BGSU a 35-33 defeat to even the match at one game apiece, as the two teams left for the locker room.
With a 27-20 Falcon lead in game three, UIC rallied back with five straight points to cut the lead to just two. However, a kill by senior Emily Manser ended the comeback and the Falcons took game three 30-26. Bowling Green hit .400 in game three.
The Flames ran away with game four, holding the Falcons to a .049 hitting percentage in the 30-23 defeat.
The Falcons fought back in game five after trailing 10-5 early in the race to 15. BGSU took the game and match when a UIC attack error followed by a Meghan Mohr kill gave Falcons a 18-16 nail-biter, and their first victory of the year.
Freshman Meghan Mohr led the Falcons with 16 kills, hitting .361. Three other Falcons recorded double-digits in kills, including sophomore Corrie Mills (13), Manser (12) and sophomore Maggie Karges (11).
The Falcons were stellar on defense against UIC, compiling 16 blocks as a team. The middle was tough, as Mills (9) and freshman Kendra Halm (7) combined for 16 blocks.
The Falcons were swept in their first match 3-0 in game one by the Denver Pioneers. Things looked good early as the Falcons took a 10-6 lead, forcing Denver to take a timeout. However, Denver stormed out of the timeout winning the game 30-20. Denver's offense was working in the first game as they hit .417 compared to .047 for the Falcons.
After trailing 0-1 to start the second game, Denver kept the lead the rest of the way in the 30-19 victory. Once again the Falcons kept it close for most the game, until an offensive surge by Denver proved to be too much.
The Brown and Orange offense looked better in game three, but still was not enough to defeat Denver in the 30-23 loss. BGSU hit just .095 for the match and totaled nine serving errors.
Mohr was impressive in her Falcon debut, hitting .545 with six kills in the match. Fellow freshman Halm led the Falcons in kills with eight. Karges led the team in digs with nine, followed by freshman Chelsey Meek (8) and Gothke (8).
The Falcons are back in action Saturday for the final two matches of the UIC Invitational. BGSU will start the day off with a 9 a.m. bout with College of Charleston before taking on the Dukes of James Madison at 2 p.m..
