BGSU Coach Gregg Brandon
Coach, what did they do to your offense?
"We were completely dominated and were outcoached in every phase of the game; offense, defense and kicking. It was embarrassing. "
If you look at your starting field position and at your defense as being on the field for so long, what was the deciding factor?
"Our defense hung in there and after the first quarter I thought we had a good chance to win the football game. We just could never get anything going offensively. You can't put a good football team like Boise out there over and over. They must have set a record tonight for first downs. It's embarrassing, it really is."
Was Boise trying to some of the same things Ball State did, but executed them better because they have better athletes?
"We haven't been able to stop the run all season and that's huge right now. If we can't stop the run we are going to struggle the rest of the way. I don't think Boise ran anything different han anyone else has run as far as schemes. They blocked us and eventually wore us down. Our defense was out there too long."
How about their defense though against Omar, was that some of the stuff Ball State was doing? Where they rush three and drop eight?
"They were doing a lot of things to confuse us and this was the first time since I have been here that we didn't have any answers. We have to check that close, they did a nice job to scheme us."
What was it that Boise was doing that was so confusing?
"They mixed up their pressures and threw Omar off balance to create some problems. They did a good job taking Sanders and Pope out of the game early, they doubled them in the passing game. At times they put a double on Sharon to mix things up. We couldn't find a single coverage guy and when we did he couldn't get open. Our inability to run the football and to stop the run is a huge concern of mine right now."
What did you tell the players?
"I said we are going to meet tomorrow and watch this game to learn from it and try to move on. We have eight games left. Temple is coming next week for homecoming and its our first home game of the season. I told them we have to fix this and get on down the road because there is still a lot of football."
Did the kickoff return just after you scored, did you se your team deflate a little bit there?
"We should be able to overcome that. It is disappointing that on special teams we continue to get "big played" in that area. There was nothing wrong with that kick. It wasn't particularly deep but it was high enough. We just didn't cover. That showed up against Wisconsin and we just need to do a better job."
How good is this Boise team? A lot of people doubted them after their 0-2 start.
"They played two pretty good football teams- Georgia and Oregon State. They weren't tested tonight, that is for sure. They are a good football team. I said that going in. they are a well coached team and they know how to do a good job."
It does not seem as if you found your rhythm today.
"I was off the whole night. This was probably one of the worst game I have ever played in college. A lot of people could have seen that and it is something I need to work on and fight through. We take pride and do not quit. They had a good game plan and they are a great team."
How frustrating was it that they were holding the ball for eight+ minutes? Did it break your rhythm that you were not out there?
"We have to get first downs. When we have first downs we feel like we are on a roll, but when we are three and out, it feels like a long time before we are on the field again and try to catch that rhythm again. We had to get more completions in the first half; I missed a lot of throws."
What were they doing?
"They had a great game plan, coming in they played different schemes and tried to mix it up and double certain guys in different situations. They did a good job of sticking with their plan."
Will it be hard to rebound from this? Are you guys a team that can put this behind you tomorrow?
"I don't know about tomorrow. By the next game we should be healed-up and ready to play football. I don't think this one game will end our season, it wasn't a MAC game. It means a lot to us but we still have our goal ahead, the MAC Championship."
What did they do that enabled them to run the ball and keep you on the field forever?
"It was really nothing that we didn't expect. We knew they did a lot of shifting and such to try to confuse you but the bottom line is they got to the perimeter. If it was the defensive end or the OLB they just ran outside all night and we could not stop them. We just didn't have the ability to stop them tonight."
How much was fatigue a factor when you are out there that long?
"The way we substitute, I do not think fatigue got to us that much. I think it was more mentally that we suffered. I think we played hard until the end and it was a tough loss to a great team with a great offense and good leadership and coaching. My hat is off to Boise State. They are everything they were hyped up to be. The bottom line was they came to play and today was their day, not ours."
How effective was their QB?
"The third downs are what broke us defensively. We were able to make plays to get them to third and long and either he would run or pass the ball which broke our back mentally."
