BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The women's track and field team opened up the indoor portion of their 2006 season at home on Saturday hosting conference rivals Western Michigan University and Miami University. Miami won the meet with a score of 134.5 points. Western finished right behind Miami with 125.5 points and Bowling Green finished third with a score of 82 points.
The Falcons had many high points today, including individual victories on the track from juniors Nicole Standback in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.77 seconds, Lyndi Springer in the 600-meter run, with a new school record time of 1:36.23, and sophomore Stephanie Hillman in the 5,000-meter run, with a new personal-best time of 17:37.18 by over 20 seconds. In the field events, TaKarra Dunning claimed the shot put title with a toss of 13.76-meters (45-01.75), setting a collegiate personal-record.
Head coach Scott Sehmann seemed pleased with the start of the new season and how the Falcons performed against Miami and WMU.
"I thought that the athletes we had competing performed at a high level for this time of the season," said Sehmann "We have some holes to fill, but we are looking to make several gains in the next few weeks. The ladies who won their respective events set the tone for bigger and better things in the near future. Overall, I'm happy with the effort of our freshman competitors as well as the upperclassman."
Other notable performances from the Falcons include second place finishes from sophomores Jamie Roflow in the mile run, setting a new personal-best time of 4:59.96, Whitney Hartman in the weight throw, tossing a new personal-best 16.50-meters (54-01.75), and third place finishes in the 600-meter run by freshman Lacey Cochran (1:38.11) Sharonda Alexander in the triple jump, leaping 10.86-meters (35-07.75) and the 4x400-meter relay (Springer, Cochran, Yemoja Marotta, and Megan McAuley) with a time of 4:00.55.
The Falcons will be back in action this upcoming Friday, as they play host to four other schools. The meet will begin at 5 p.m. in Perry Field House.
