Orange And Brown Open Season On The Road

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team opened the 2006 season with a third place finish in the All-Ohio Championship, in Columbus, Ohio. Host Ohio State University captured the title with a team score of 190.200, while Kent State University with 189.375 points finished second. BGSU scored 186.700 as a team.
"I was very happy with the girls effort on the vault," said head coach Dan Connelly. The Falcons dominated the vault with the team scoring 48.175 to win the event.
Senior Jessica Guyer led the way with a first place finish of 9.725. Sophomore Jayme Stambaugh (9.700) placed second, while junior Jillian Stranges (9.650) captured fourth. Allison Swafford (9.575) finishing eighth setting a personal best, and Jessica McArthur (9.525) finishing tenth.
The next event that would swing the Falcons' way was the balance beam, placing three gymnasts in the Top 10. Jillian Stranges finished second with a score of 9.600 while Guyer (9.525) added a fifth place finish. First-time Falcon Jholeen Ponce (9.225) added a tenth place finish. Connelly added, "Jholeen did a fine job for her first meet."
Other top ten finishes were Guyer (9.675) taking forth on the floor, the co-captain would go on to finish in the Top Five in all three events she competed in. Sophomore Candice Deacon set a career best on the floor with a 9.600 and an eighth place finish. Jessica McArthur (9.500) took seventh while setting a career best, and Candice Deacon (9.425) also added a career best tenth place finish on the bars.
"Tonight I was very pleased with the performances of Jillian Stranges, Jessica Guyer, and Jessica McArthur. However we still have our work cut out for us," said Connelly.
The Falcons will return home on Saturday, January 21 at 7:00 p.m. to face conference opponent Central Michigan, University.
