FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - Senior Jon Horrell and freshman Brandon Svendsen were honored by the Central Collegiate Hockey Association today (Jan. 3) after Horrell was named CCHA Goaltender of the Week and Svendsen earned CCHA Rookie of the Week.
Horrell earns the award for the second time in his career, both coming this season. He earned his first CCHA award back on Oct. 24 after stopping 41-of-43 shots in a 2-2 tie with Ohio State. This week he earned the award by stopping 70-of-73 shots faced at the UConn Holiday Classic, en route to being named to the All-Tournament team. In the semi-finals with UMass he stole the show, stopping 40-of-42 shots, one shy of his career-high in a 3-2 win over the Minutemen. The following night Horrell turned-aside 30-of-31 shots in a 9-2 win over the host Huskies in the championship contest. For the weekend he recorded a 1.56 gaa and a .959 save percentage.

Svendsen earns his first CCHA honor of his career after posting three points (1g, 2a) en route to helping the Falcons claim the UConn Holiday Classic championship this past weekend. Versus UMass, the freshman assisted on the Falcons second goal of the game and followed that up with a goal and assist the following night against the Huskies. His goal in the championship game with UConn was the eventual game-winner.
Back on Dec. 9 Svendsen dove headfirst into the BGSU goal post in an attempt to stop an empty net goal by Clarkson. While deflecting the puck into the corner his momentum also carried him headfirst into the boards behind the net. The impact was extreme enough that Svendsen had to leave the ice surface on a stretcher. The following night versus St. Lawrence the freshman was back out there and scored a goal to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead, a game they would eventually win 6-4 and extend his point streak to three games. In his last nine games he has recorded nine points (4g, 5a), after scoring only two points (1g, 1a) in his first 10 games of his Falcon career and is currently on a five-game point streak (2-5-7).
Horrell, Svendsen and the rest of the Falcons play host to Colgate tonight (Jan. 3) inside the BGSU Ice Arena. Opening face-off is set for 7:05 p.m.
