COLUMBUS, OHIO - A goal by sophomore Derek Whitmore at the 18:16 mark of the third period gave the BGSU Falcons a 3-2 win over #16 Ohio State Friday night inside the Value City Arena. The victory was the Falcons first over the Bucks since October 26, 2001 and extended their overall win streak to five games.
"Not many teams are going to come in here against this team and win a major shot on goal battle," said head coach Scott Paluch. "They have so much skill, with so many talented players, and they are so deep."
OSU opened the scoring with a short-handed goal by Matt Waddell at the8:26 mark of the opening period, but sophomore Alex Foster answered back with a goal of his own just 2:30 later.
The Falcons dumped the puck around the boards, which took a strange bounce and came back to OSU goaltender Dave Caruso. Caruso bent down to cover the puck, but it slipped through the webbing of his glove and Foster flipped the puck over Caruso to knot the score at one apiece.
OSU (10-7-3, 6-5-1 CCHA) once again regained the lead with an even-strength tally by Sam Campbell at the 9:12 mark of the second, but the Falcons once again answered the bell.
Mike Falk dumped the puck down low to Foster who skated around the back of the net and found senior Ryan Barnett between the circles. Barnett shot a wrister through the five-hole of Caruso for the tying goal at the18:15 mark of the second.
Nearly 20 minutes went by before either team scored again, but at the 18:16 mark of the third Whitmore picked up a John Mazzei rebound and placed it in the back of the net for the game-winner.
For the night senior Jon Horrell continued his stellar play, turning-aside 38-of-40 shots, preserving the BGSU victory.
Bowling Green (9-11-1, 5-8-1 CCHA) was 1-for-6 on the power play and held the Buckeyes scoreless with the man advantage on six tries.
These same two teams will do again tomorrow night at the BGSU Ice Arena. Opening face-off is set for 7:05 p.m., with the game being shown live of FSN Detroit.
