Bowling Green, Ohio - Freshman Chris Bullock scored on a 15-yard run with 13:13 left in the game and the BGSU defense allowed just 17 yards in the final quarter as the Falcons posted a 24-21 comeback win over Eastern Michigan on Homecoming.
BGSU improves to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the MAC, while EMU is now 0-6 and 0-3 in the league.
"It was a great for our young team to get a victory at home," said BGSU Coach Gregg Brandon. "We had a great home crowd which was huge for this team."
Trailing 21-17 with 2:20 left in the third quarter, the Falcons went 78 yards on 12 plays and took the lead for good on Bullock's 15-yard burst.
The Falcons forced two three and outs in the final period before EMU got the ball back deep in their own territory (at the EMU six) with 3:04 to go.
The Eagles would keep the ball for 10 plays, but their scoring threat was ended when senior Terrel White picked off his second pass of the night with 26 seconds left in the game.
"Terrel was in the right position most of the day," said Brandon. "Most of our defenders were as well. I thought our guys were relentless with the pass rush today."
The Falcons got on the board first when freshman Sean Ellis booted a 23-yard field goal with six seconds left in the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead. The Eagles hit a home run with 8:29 left in the first half when Tyler Jones hit Eric Deslauriers for a 79-yard scoring strike to give the Eagles a 7-3 lead.
BGSU would come back to regain the lead with a 33-yard scoring toss from sophomore Anthony Turner to sophomore Corey Partridge with 6:49 to go in the half.
Three plays later, White would pick off his first pass of the game and returned it 47 yards to the EMU four-yard line. Freshman Freddie Barnes would score on the ground on the next play as BGSU would take a 17-7 lead.
Prior to the end of the first half, EMU would use nine plays and go 78 yards when Jones hooked up again with Deslauriers for a 23-yard scoring toss to cut the lead to 17-14 just before halftime.
BGSU would get the ball first in the second half, but a fumble on the third play from scrimmage gave the Eagles the ball at the BGSU 34-yard line. Six plays later, Pierre Walker rushed for an 11-yard TD with 11:09 to go in the third quarter.
After the Falcons turned the ball over on downs, the Eagles would eat up 8:44 on their next drive and appeared to break the Falcons back on a first and 23 play, but Deslauriers dropped a pass in the end zone and Andrew Wellock missed a 40-yard field goal attempt three plays later.
The Falcons then began their winning drive with Turner connecting on five of six passes in the series to help set up Bullock's game-winning scamper.
The BGSU defense put pressure on the Eagles all day with four sacks (two by Devon Parks, one by White and one by Diyral Briggs) and six QB hurries. In addition, EMU was held to just 82 yards on the ground.
The Falcons will have a short week as they prepare for a Thursday night showdown with MAC West leader Central Michigan who improved to 4-0 with an 18-7 win against Ball State at home today. The game will be shown on ESPNU and kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
