BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team captured their 14th consecutive win with a 3-0 sweep at Eastern Michigan. The Falcons have swept their last four opponents.
Junior Madeline Means led BGSU with 12 kills and Sophomore Kendra Halm recorded a team-high seven blocks. Sophomore Chelsey Meek racked up an impressive 29 digs in the three-game contest.
With the score tight at 8-6 in the opening act, BGSU scored five of the next six points to force an Eastern Michigan timeout at 13-7. Bowling Green responded to the timeout with a block by Halm and Freshman Corey Domek. Despite being doubled up at 14-7, the Eagles stormed back and made it a close contest. EMU fought off three straight game points to create a 29-28 score. However, Means blasted her sixth kill of the game to give the Falcons a 30-28 victory.
Bowling Green acclerated out to an 8-3 advantage to begin the second game. A few points later it was deja vu for the Eagles as they watched Halm and Domek combine for another rejection following an EMU timeout. The game went back and forth upto the 25-24 point. Domek and Halm then alternated two kills apiece to seize a 29-24 lead. An Eagle attack error resulted in point number 30, and a two games to none lead for the Falcons. Bowling Green did not trail at any point in game two.
The Brown and Orange limited their attack errors in the third and final game, hitting a match-high .220 efficiency. Senior captain Chrissy Gothke compiled four kills, six assists and five digs in the final game, a 30-20 Falcon win. The Whitehouse, Ohio native came up just one kill shy of a triple-double for the match.
BGSU (18-2, 8-0) gets very little rest as they hop back on the road for an away match at IPFW on Tuesday night. Match time is scheduled for 7 PM.
Quotes From Head Coach Denise Van De Walle
"Today wasn't our best performance, we had a sluggish start and had to squeak out game one."
"I want to compliment Chelsey (Meek) on her defense today and her 29 digs. Chrissy (Gothke) at times really turned the match around with how offensive she was."
"It wasn't until point 26 in game two that I think we started looking good. The last four points of game two is how we are accustomed to playing."
"We had higher expectations for this match, but we are happy with the win. It was our second lowest hitting efficiency of the year, we just couldn't hit the shots we were looking for."
