BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team continued its amazing 2006 run by taking a 3-1 road win at IPFW Tuesday night, extending their current winning streak to 15 consecutive matches. The Mastodons had won 11 of their last 12 matches coming into Tuesday night's contest. Bowling Green improves to 19-2 overall and remains 8-0 in conference play this season.
Defense was the key for the Falcons as the normally explosive offense struggled at times. Sophomore Kendra Halm chipped in seven blocks and five different Falcons posted double-digit digs.
Despite a .111 hitting efficiency in the opening act, BGSU seized a 30-25 win. Junior Madeline Means provided four kills to the offensive attack. Bowling Green rejected four Mastodon attack attempts in game one, and 14 total team blocks for the match.
Junior Stephanie Swiger hammered home a perfectly set ball by Senior Chrissy Gothke to even the score at 26-26 in game two. Junior Maggie Karges followed with a service ace. Sophomore Chelsey Meek then recorded another Falcon kill, followed up once again by a Karges service ace to hand Bowling Green a 29-26 advantage. However, the Mastodons snatched the next two points, forcing a BGSU timeout. The Brown and Orange came out of the huddle and wrapped up game two thanks to a Means kill to take a 30-28 win.
A 5-0 Falcon lead to begin game three quickly diminished as Bowling Green shot themselves in the foot with 11 attack errors. Halm's play was impressive in game three however, recording four blocks (three solo). BGSU eventually dropped game three, 30-21.
Game four was a dead heat midway through as the Falcons and Mastodons battled to a 15-15 stalemate at the halfway point. A Means-kill broke the tie, beginning a 5-1 run for the Brown and Orange that led to 20-16 lead. The four-point margin proved to be the difference as Bowling Green took a 30-26 advantage in the game four clincher.
The Falcons jump back into MAC action this weekend with a pair of road matches. First up is a Friday night battle at Buffalo scheduled for 7 PM. Bowling Green then makes a stop in Akron Saturday afternoon.
