BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Visiting Central Michigan University scored twice within a span of 1:15 early in the second half, and the Chippewas went on to down the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Friday afternoon (Oct. 20). The Mid-American Conference game was held at Cochrane Field.
With the win, the Chippewas improve to 12-3-1 on the season and 5-3-1 in MAC play. The Falcons drop to 8-9-0 and 5-4-0, respectively.
With two games left in the regular season, the Falcons are now tied for fifth place with Kent State and Miami. BGSU owns the tiebreaker with both the Golden Flashes and RedHawks in the event of a deadlock at the end of the season (MAC standings listed below).

The opening half was characterized primarily by midfield play, with scoring chances few and far between for both the Falcons and Chippewas. Central held a 6-2 first-half advantage in shots, with both goalies, BGSU sophomore Christy Zabek and CMU's Anne Decker, forced to make just one save apiece.
The visitors had a rare first-half flurry with just under nine minutes left before intermission, as Jacquie Lacek fired a shot from the left side that was deflected by Zabek. The rebound went to Alison Heydorn, whose shot was over the goal.
Perhaps the best chance of the half, for either team, came with just over 10 seconds left in the half. A Laura Roberts pass sent Martin through on the left side. Martin headed into the box, cut the ball back to her right to avoid a charging BG defender, and uncorked a shot. But, the try sailed high just before the public-address announcer began the 10-second countdown to mark the end of the opening 45 minutes.
The Falcons mounted a threat early in the second half. With less than two minutes gone, senior Lindsay Carter's pass sent sophomore Corbie Yee ahead. Yee blew past a Chippewa defender and headed toward Decker and the net. At about the 18-yard box, however, one of the CMU defenders, who had the angle on Yee, forced her to take a hurried shot that went wide right.
In the 52nd minute, the Chippewas broke the scoreless draw. Zabek came out of her net a few steps to try to redirect a left-side cross out of danger. She got a hand on the ball, but Martin tracked it down on the right side of the net and tried a bad-angle shot. That shot was deflected by a BG defender, but the ball caromed directly to Tydings, who fired a shot on goal. Zabek got a hand on it, but was not able to prevent it from going into the net.
The goal, at the 51:38 mark, was the first career goal allowed by Zabek.
Just over a minute later, however, Central struck again. Heydorn, with the ball at the touch line on the right side of the net, slid a pass back to an open Martin, who deposited a shot from eight yards out. That goal came at 52:53 and gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Five minutes later, Cygan whirled and fired a shot from a bad angle that was blocked by a Central backliner. Yee was the first to the ball on the left side of the goal, and eluded a defender, but her point-blank shot was knocked out of bounds by a charging Decker.
Just over two minutes later, though, the Falcons got on the board. A Central defender blocked a Yee shot with her hand, and a penalty kick was awarded. Cygan took the kick, the Falcons' first PK attempt of the year, and converted, placing it into the lower right corner of the net at the 60:16 mark.
Central, however, scored an insurance goal with 7:42 left in the second half. Martin got in behind the Falcon defense, and was able to make a move to get past Zabek. The BGSU goalie, who had come out of her net to contest the breakaway, got a hand on the ball, but Martin was able to keep possession, and she rolled it into the open net for her second goal of the day and eighth of the season.
The Chippewas held a 14-11 shots advantage, including a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Martin had six of Central's 14 shot attempts, while Yee led the Falcons with five shots, including two of BG's four shots on goal.
Decker and Zabek each played 90 minutes and made three saves.
"Wins and losses always have an emotion attached to them," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "And, although we are disappointed and upset with the loss, the performance was a great credit to the team.
"Statistically, the game was very even, and Central just did a better job of taking their chances. Central Michigan is a very experienced team; they have a lot of seniors with an enormous amount of experience under their belt, and I think that was the difference between the two teams today.
"We are still an evolving program. Less than half of the players on the field today were in the program or played significant time with us last year. So, we are still going through a great deal of transition. As I said, we weren't happy with the result, but the performance is still of credit to us. We look forward to improving upon that and looking to get the right result on Sunday."
The Falcons will be home once again on Sunday (Oct. 22), taking on Eastern Michigan University in a 1:00 p.m. start. Sunday marks 'Senior Day' at Cochrane Field, with Carter, BGSU's lone senior, being recognized in pregame ceremonies.
NOTES
* As mentioned, Central Michigan's first goal was the first-ever goal allowed by sophomore Christy Zabek in her collegiate career ... Carly Tydings' goal snapped Zabek's shutout streak at 544:48, the equivalent of just over six games, without having to fish a ball out of the back of the net.
* This season, Zabek had gone 478:39 without allowing a goal before CMU's first score ... despite allowing three goals on Friday, Zabek has a goals-against average of 0.52 in 2006 ... in her career, she has played in 12 games, starting four, and now has a GAA of just 0.46.
* Junior Danielle Cygan's penalty-kick attempt was the first awarded to the Falcons this season ... the last time a BG player had attempted a penalty kick came on Nov. 6, 2005 ... on that date, the Falcons and Kent State battled to a scoreless draw in the MAC Tournament championship, but BGSU advanced past the Flashes via PKs.
* Sophomore Corbie Yee has had a total of 12 shot attempts over the Falcons' last two games ... Yee has had the team's two highest single-gmae shot totals of the year in those two contests, with seven shots vs. Buffalo last Sunday (Oct. 15) and five shot attempts vs. CMU.
* Cygan's goal vs. CMU was her third of the season, tying her with Yee for the team lead in 2006.
* Cygan, after scoring a total of four points in her first two years in the Brown and Orange, now has a BG-high 10 points this fall to date.
* The Falcons lead Central Michigan, 5-4-2, in the all-time series between the teams ... Central's win on Friday broke a two-game series winning streak for BG ... only two times in the BGSU-CMU series has the home team emerged victorious ... BGSU now has a home mark of 1-3-1 vs. the Chippewas, and the Falcons are 3-1-0 in away matches and 1-0-1 in neutral-site contests vs. Central.
