BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team increased their season win total to 24 matches with a dominating performance at Kent State. The Falcons hit .333 compared to Kent State's .093 hitting pace in route to a 30-22, 30-24, 30-16 sweep.
Sophomore Meghan Mohr was inserted into the starting lineup Friday night and she responded in a big way with a .727 hitting efficiency (8-0-11). Junior Corrie Mills paced the Falcons with 12 kills and six blocks.
"I was really pleased with out serving tonight," said Head Coach Denise Van De Walle. "We were able to disrupt Kent's offense by serving short."
"I was really impressed with Corrie Mills and Meghan Mohr tonight. Mills led us in kills and blocks and had a complete night at the net. I thought Meghan attacked the ball very well."
BGSU wasted little time setting the tone for the night, posting a .464 hitting percentage in the game-one victory. The Brown and Orange jumped out to a 10-2 lead, never trailing in the opening act. Mills' fourth block of the match was the finisher, giving Bowling Green point number 30.
"I was really happy we hit as well as we did since our passing was not up to par," said Van De Walle."
After dropping the first three points in game two, Bowling Green rattled off seven in a row, highlighted by a pair of blocks from Mills and Sophomore Kendra Halm. Mills scarred the Golden Flashes with six kills in game two. Sophomore Chelsey Meek impeded the Kent State attack with seven game-two digs.
Bowling Green held a block party in game three, rejecting the Flashes offense with seven blocks and a -.059 hitting pace. Mills continued her strong play with a team-high four block assists in the third game, closely followed by Junior Stephanie Swiger's three blocks in the match-clinching win.
"Chrissy (Gothke) ran the offense very well tonight," said Van De Walle. "She got some one-on-ones for her hitters, she was very aggressive."
The Falcons improve to 24-4 overall and 13-2 in conference play. A date with the defending MAC champion Ohio Bobcats is scheduled for Saturday night at 7 PM. After Ohio, the Brown and Orange will have a week to get ready for the second round of the MAC tournament as they have clinched a first round bye and the number three seed.
