DETROIT, Mich. - Post-game quotes after the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team downed the University of Detroit Mercy, 68-37, Friday night (Nov. 10) ...
BGSU HEAD COACH CURT MILLER
"I think we had some jitters tonight. We were definitely nervous at the start of the game. We are a veteran crew, but even veteran groups have some nerves in the first game of the year. Once we got over that, we did much better. Certainly, the play of our bench, between Amber (Flynn), Whitney (Taylor) and Jazz (McCall) gave us a huge lift in the first half. They really got us going."
On the play of Whitney Taylor
"Whitney is such an explosive offensive player, and she has always had the ability, offensively, to impact this program. In her first two years, though, she often was playing in fifth gear when she needed to be in third gear. The one thing that she has really worked on, and has really learned over the first two years, is to play fast, but to play in control. She is tremendously talented offensively, and I think our fans are going to see that out of her all year."
On Amber Flynn
"I think, while the starters were trying to fight through some nerves, she got to take a breath on the bench. Amber is one of our smartest players in terms of Xs and Os. She saw what was going on before she went into the game, and I think she felt more comfortable with the flow of the game when she got in."
On Detroit native Jasmine McCall
"I thought Jasmine McCall may have played the best game of her BGSU career tonight. She played with a composure that we didn't always see during her freshman year, had some nice passes and was disruptive in the passing lanes on defense."
Even during the times when the offense was struggling, were you happy with the way your defense was playing?
"The theme of the whole night, for the coaching staff, was this: we felt there would be a lot of things in this game that would make us happy, but we also knew there would be a lot of things that would make us moan and groan. But, we wanted to force them to make shots. We want people to have to work very hard to make shots against us, and certainly, we did a good job of making Detroit work, and did not allow them to make very many shots."
SENIOR AMBER FLYNN
When you entered the game, did you try to bring a spark to the team?
"Yes, I did. I knew that we could play as a team, with a little more intensity. It was a little dead out there, and I just tried to provide a spark."
SENIOR MEGAN THORBURN
How did you get the transition game going after those first few minutes of the game?
"It is always fun to get some 'easy' points. We knew we had to increase the intensity, and once you get one (transition basket), they can just keep coming. We mainly just tried to push the ball up the floor. That's always our main focus: push the ball and make smart passes."
Was everyone nervous, or trying too hard, at the start of the game?
"I was nervous; I don't know why. But, after the first couple minutes, I think we settled down. We needed to work through that, I guess."
