FALCONS BEGIN FIVE-GAME HOMESTAND AGAINST FURMAN
The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team (1-1) will begin a five-game homestand when it hosts Furman (2-1) of the Southern Conference this Sunday at 2 p.m. .
BGSU is coming off a 64-54 loss at Arkansas State on Thursday, while Furman dropped a 67-58 decision at Clemson, Wednesday night. This is the first of a two-game series which will have BGSU visiting Greenville, S.C., next season.
DEFENSE AHEAD OF THE 0FFENSE FOR FALCONS
Against Arkansas State, BGSU forced 29 turnovers, but a 26.9% shooting effort from the field kept the Falcons from the positive side of the win-loss column. BGSU nearly overcame a 20-point deficit in the second half. Trailing 40-20 with 18:53 left in the game, BGSU went on a 14-0 run to make it 40-34 when senior Martin Samarco hit a three-pointer with 14:29 to go. After the Indians built the lead to 44-34, sophomore Brian Guerin knocked home a three-pointer and sophomore Darryl Clements hit a conventional three-pointer and then another basket with 11:16 to go to make it 44-42. ASU would build the lead again to 10 at 54-44 with 6:01 to go, but BGSU used a three-pointer by Samarco with 4:45 to go and a pair of free throws by senior Matt Lefeld with 3:19 left got the Falcons as close as they would get at 54-51. The Falcons' defense forced the Indians into three turnovers in their first five trips down the floor, but BGSU could not capitalize on their early good fortune failing to score off the ASU miscues, missing three layups in the process. Arkansas State led at halftime, 33-19 and Samarco led BGSU with 16 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Erik Marschall had 10 points and six rebounds. Junior Ryne Hamblet had eight points, five rebounds and four steals.
