CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University women's soccer sophomore Christy Zabek has been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, the league office has announced. Zabek, the Falcons' lone selection to the team, earns the honor for the first time, in her first year of eligibility.
The Academic All-MAC Women's Soccer team is the result of voting by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. A total of 25 student-athletes were named to the team. The number of honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team are the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
Zabek, a native of Hendersonville, Tenn. (Hendersonville HS), has a 3.67 cumulative grade point average as a marketing major.
A goalkeeper, Zabek saw action in 12 matches in 2006, making seven starters. She finished the season with a BGSU school record-low goals-against average of 0.67, and a record of 5-2-0. In over 803 minutes of work this season, Zabek allowed just six goals. She posted five shutouts in her seven starts.
In MAC play, Zabek had a GAA of only 0.48, with three goals allowed in 562 minutes. She began her BGSU career with a shutout streak of 544:48, the equivalent of over six full games without having to fish a ball out of the back of the net.
Zabek had three saves in a 1-0, overtime win over arch-rival Toledo to close the regular season, and made seven stops in another 1-0 win, against Eastern Michigan. She had back-to-back complete-game shutouts in road wins over Kent State and Buffalo, making seven saves vs. the Golden Flashes and a career-high nine stops against the Bulls. Her first shutout of the season had come against Youngstown State.
The Academic All-MAC honor is bestowed upon a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior-college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Bowling Green finished the 2006 season with an overall record of 10-10-0. The Falcons of head coach Andy Richards, with just one senior and 12 newcomers on the 24-player roster, had a 7-4-0 MAC record to tie for third place in the 12-team league. Zabek helped the BGSU defense to post a school-record 10 shutouts on the season.
