BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - With the Holiday season officially underway, the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team began the long Thanksgiving weekend by volunteering Tuesday at the Cherry Street Mission in Toledo. The team, coaches and children of the staff helped serve lunch and wash dishes during their visit.
"You want to make sure they know how much they are given and how much they have," said BGSU coach Dan Dakich. "Whether you win or lose basketball games is fairly important, but at the end of the day we have been given a lot and when that is the case, you have to give back. Some people don't have control over their circumstances and I think it is an important lesson for our kids to understand how fortunate they are and that if they develop a lifelong practice of giving back, everyone benefits."
The team switched their practice time from noon to 6 a.m. so they could participate.
"Being able to help people out helps build our team up and shows the character of this group," said freshman Ryan Sims.
"I think it's really cool," said senior Matt Lefeld. "Being from a small town, I have never had the opportunity to do anything like this as far as getting into a bigger city and giving back to those who need help. "We are very fortunate as a Division I athlete and I have a lot to be thankful about."
