BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -
BGSU head coach Scott Paluch
"First and foremost, I like the effort put forth in terms of a lot of guys playing through some injuries. I really like the effort and enthusiasm. I just think ultimately we took too many penalties against a really good offensive hockey team. I thought we had opportunities at 5-on-5 and on our power play to give us a chance and be successful and get out of this goal-scoring drought. But ultimately, we just played way too much of the game shorthanded against a team that has too many skilled hockey players, which was clearly the difference in the game."
On the Mavericks quick start in the first period
"They were able to capitalize early on the power play and get two quick power play goals and feel pretty good about their game. But even at that point I still like the way our team was playing. We had some territorial time there and the next thing you know they have a 2-on-1 to make it 3-0. We would create momentum with some pretty good work and then the penalties would just take us right out of it."
On the impact of James Unger coming back
"Well we were able to get a half game out of him. I thought for it being nine weeks now without doing much hockey, that he did a pretty good job. As expected, it [wrist] got a little tight on him so he wasn't able to go the rest of the way, but it was a good start for James. We need some offensive confidence and that's what we want out of Jimmie. He's been able to score at a decent pace here for three years on a team that's fighting it right now offensively. I think when he's back and at full strength he'll be able to help in that area."
On what he's doing to keep the team morale up
"I think you kind of saw it tonight. We've been on a [losing] streak and we fall down early, but you saw a team scratching and fighting. That's what we expect. That's only way that this is going to turn. We need those blocked shots and finish those checks and those are thing that are going to get us through this."
Kai Kantola
Are you happy offensively with your team's chances?
"For sure. There is no doubt in my mind. We played such great offense that I believe we can come back tomorrow put some goals in the net and get a win out of it."
Does the way the power play went tonight give you a little more confidence?
"Definitely. That first goal means a lot. We've been shutout a couple of times, but that first goal always brings forth life in the offensive and especially the power play. We were moving it really well tonight and that's a big confidence boost for us and we're ready to come back tomorrow and show the same thing."
