FALCONS PLAY FIVE OF NEXT SIX AWAY FROM HOME
The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team (4-3) will visit Wright State (3-3) to begin a stretch of five of the next six games away from home during the remainder of the month. The Falcons are coming off a 72-58 loss at home to Central Arkansas, while WSU will travel to Marshall, Wednesday night. For fans planning to attend the Wright State game, a post-game concert featuring the group Survivor (Over 30, think Rocky III; Under 30, think Starbucks commercial) will take place.
SAMARCO IS THE MAC'S TOP SCORER, 11TH IN THE NATION
BGSU senior Martin Samarco is the top scorer in the MAC averaging 22.6 points per game. During the recent five-game homestand, he averaged 25.4 points and scored 20 points or more in four of the five games. He is currently the 11th leading scorer in the nation. He is the top returning scorer in the MAC after he finished second in the league averaging 18.9 points per game. He also is fifth all-time in three-point field goals made at BGSU with 118. He had a school record 100 last season. He also is currently third in the league in three-point field goals made per game at 2.57 and eighth in steals at 1.86.
IN THE MAC
The Falcons lead the league in steals and are 22nd in the nation averaging 10 per game. BGSU is second in turnover margin (+4.0) and assist/turnover ratio (1.17) and are third in field goal percentage defense (40.7). BGSU is fourth in the MAC in scoring defense (65.1), three-point field goals made (7.14) and three-point field goal percentage (35.7).
OTHER MAC STANDOUTS
Freshman Ryan Sims leads the MAC in three-point field goal percentage (56.2). Junior Ryne Hamblet leads the MAC in assists (5.3) and is third in steals (2.14) and defensive rebounds (5.3) and eighth in assist/turnover ratio (1.6). Sophomore Erik Marschall is seventh in the league in field goal percentage (55.6) and eighth in offensive rebounds (2.67). Senior Matt Lefeld is 10th in the league in free throw percentage (77.3).
MARSCHALL OUT WITH BROKEN FOOT
Sophomore Erik Marschall was coming off the best half of his career with 14 points, three rebounds and three assists when he felt pain in his right foot just before halftime against Arkansas State. He was taken for X-rays which revealed he suffered a broken foot which will sideline him for at least four weeks. He is averaging 11.8 points and 4.5 rebounds and is shooting 55.6 from the field. He had scored in double figures in six straight games this season.
DAKICH HAS SECOND BEST WINNING PERCENTAGE IN SCHOOL HISTORY
BGSU Coach Dan Dakich is in his 10th season with the Falcons and was the second fastest men's basketball coach in school history to win 100 games. He is 147-125 (54.2) overall (second-best in BGSU history) and is 86-76 (53.0) in the MAC. He ranks 12th all-time in MAC history in league wins and in overall victories by a coach. He needs one win to tie BGSU Hall-of-Famer and former Kent State Coach Jim McDonald on the league's all-time win list at 148. BGSU is 34-7 at home against non-conference foes under Coach Dakich. His four 18+win seasons are tied for second most by a Falcon coach as he notched those in his first eight seasons after BGSU had posted just four 18+win seasons in the previous 14 seasons prior to his arrival. With the win against Arkansas State, he surpassed John Weinert for fourth place on the all-time win list at BGSU.
