COLUMBUS - Veterans Kim Albin and Alisha Yee, along with rookie Frankie Houck, set a combined five new personal best times at the Ohio State Invitational where the Falcons finished seventh overall in a pool of 14 participating teams.
The University of South Carolina took the win followed by host OSU in second and the University of Utah in third. Iowa and Denver rounded out the top five. Arkansas finished just ahead of the Falcons in sixth, while Purdue, Miami (Fla.) and Arizona State comprise the remaining top ten. Alabama and Notre Dame placed eleventh and twelfth, respectively.
Yee, a sophomore, led the Falcons' effort with three top ten finishes in individual event competition. Her third place finish in the 100 back (56.86) was the highest finish for all BGSU swimmers and beat her previous personal best record of 57.47. The quick finish also gives Yee the second best historical time in the event. Nancy Simpson retained the program's record of 56.20 that was set in 1997. In the 200 back, the sophomore propelled herself to third overall on the all-time list with her 2:04.71 PR. Yee also picked up a seventh place finish in the 200 IM; it was her lowest individual performance for the weekend. Additionally, she was a member of four relays teams that finished in the top ten.
An additional pair of personal bests were set by rookie Frankie Houck in the sprint free events. Her 50 free finish was clocked at 24.37 and just narrowly missed her placement on the all-time top ten list. Currently, the tenth place position is held by recent graduate Dana Schultz who finished the event in 24.36. Houck's PR was good enough to ensure the 18th best time in the race. In the 100 free, the freshman etched her name in the BGSU record books with her first top ten time. Houck currently ranks eighth overall after swimming to a time of 52.86 and a 15th place finish.
Lastly, Albin set a new personal record in the 400 IM as she finished 11th with a mark of 4:32.50. The time moves the junior up two slots to seventh overall on the all-time top ten list. Yet another PR was almost broke with her 2:09.18 finish in the 200 IM; currently her best time is a 2:08.90. She also picked up an eighth place finish in the 200 breast (2:25.85).
Captain Caroline Keating also picked up three top fifteen finishes in the distance free events including the mile (7th, 17:25.69) and 500 free (8th, 5:08.40), and the sprint 200 free (15th, 1:55.29). Fellow captain Brit O'Connor scored on two 15th place finishes in the 100 (1:00.54) and the 200 back (2:09.98) events.
Jennifer Wright and Michael Carriaga also scored on their top ten finishes in the 200 free and 100 fly event, respectively.
As a squad, the Falcons scored at least one relay team in every top ten with the highest finish of sixth place overall in the 200 medley. One additional 200 medley foursome took ninth place.
The Falcons will take a hiatus from competition until January 13 when competition resumes against the University of Akron at Akron's Ocasek Natatorium. The Mid-American Conference dual meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
