BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University head football coach Gregg Brandon sat down with the media today (Feb. 1) to discuss the newest recruiting class to join the Falcon program. Attached are quotes from the press conference.
I see you got a pretty good kicker and punter.
"The punter, I am really excited about. Kid out of South Miami, Alonso Rojas is really a polished, athletic punter. He can boom it, and obviously we need a punter with the graduation of Nate Fry. I think he'll be able to step right in and handle the job. The kicker Sean Ellis is a kid from Merritt Island, Florida, that really has a strong leg, most of his kickoffs go out (of the end zone), very accurate field goal guy and can make extra points. I'm excited about both those guys. They both can be impact players right out of the chute. We scoured the country, we visited combines in California, Nevada, Florida, Texas and wherever there were punters and kickers displayed we went. We feel like we nabbed two of the best in the country."
Anyone here early?
"Jerett (Sanderson) is a kid that is already here now, a kid out of Fort Union Military Academy. We've already seen him in action a little bit in some winter conditioning. He is really going to be a good player for us. He has a chance to start, which is huge. The opportunity to participate in spring football is huge. He'll get a leg up and getting his feet on the ground academically will help him as well."
What are the strengths of this year's class?
"I like the defensive speed. I think we really helped ourselves at linebacker and in the secondary. The three linebackers that we signed could all play as freshmen, particularly on special teams. The back end kids will really help us right away again on special teams. Jahmal Brown, who was a great running back, we are going to give him a shot on defense. He'll be an impact guy. Tarell Lewis is very athletic and quick so I think that side of the ball has really improved itself.
Can you talk about your two quarterbacks?
"(Tyler) Sheehan is an excellent quarterback, a big rangy guy, cannon for an arm, very mobile and athletic. He fits our scheme well. (Anthony) Glaud and Tyler Sheehan really fit our scheme really well. They are good leaders, accurate passers, strong arm guys that can run. I am excited about being able to land them both."
You seem a bit excited today.
"To me this is like game day. We have been busting our tails for 364 days to celebrate on one day. I am jacked up about this group."
You got some big guys on the defensive side of the ball.
"I really like the inside players we took on defense. We don't have anybody on the team like DJ Young, he is 6'5 280 pounds. I'm real excited about him, he can run and was heavily recruited. Orlando Barrow is 6'3, 270 pounds, very athletic kid from Virginia. Those two guys are the big-bodied guys that we've been lacking since I got here. A guy that can just take over the game, and that's what I see DJ Young bringing to the table."
Has the recruiting improved in the last few years?
"Kids look at Bowling Green and see a great program, a winning program, a program that is going to be challenging for a championship year in and year out. A program that is stepping up in facilities like the Sebo Athletic Center. We have a great academic institution and tradition. Being on television 15 times in the last three years doesn't hurt either."
Can you talk about the wide receivers?
"They can run, there is great speed there. Kelvin Davis is a burner. Tyrone Pronty has great speed. Derek Brighton is not as fast, more in the Cole (Magner) mold. He has good football speed, can separate, has great hands, has a knack for getting open and can make plays.
