KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University gymnastics squad fell shy of a victory on Sunday against Mid American Conference leaders, Western Michigan University, by a score of 190.100-187.325. The Falcons showed much improvement from last week to this week and were led by Junior Allison Swafford and Jessica Guyer.
Head Coach Dan Connelly was very pleased with the optimism of the team.
"We are very happy with the teams effort today, the improvement from last week to this week was noticeable. However there is still improvement that needs to be done, but we are getting there."
The Falcons continued to excel on the vault, as every member finished 9.525 or higher. Guyer led the way with a season best of 9.775. Swafford also broke the top five, marking a 9.675 and finished fourth. Other Falcons that would land in the top ten were Jayme Stambaugh (9.650) finishing fifth, Jacquelyn Bernhardt (9.600) placed eighth, and Jillian Stranges (9.550) ended ninth.
The bars would be the toughest event for the team, for only two Falcons finished in the top ten. Jessica Bradley flipped her way to a 9.425 and a third place finish, while Jenna Wirtanen landed a 9.000 and a fifth place spot.
Sophomore Jholeen Ponce posted a 9.525 on the beam and a second place finish. This is Ponce's highest finish on beam this season.
The only winner on the day would go to Jessica Guyer who tumbled her way into first recording a 9.825. This win marks Guyer's third time claiming the floor this season. Swafford also recorded a season best of 9.725 and a third place finish on the floor.
Next week the Orange and Brown will travel to Piscataway, NJ to tackle a five-team meet. They will see host Rutgers, Rhode Island University, Towson State, and Bridgeport. The meet is scheduled to be on Saturday Feb. 25 at 7:00 p.m. inside Livingston Gym.
"We are facing four teams all at about the same level," said Connelly. "This will greatly help us prepare for the MAC tournament, as we will see seven teams. Also competing at Western Michigan already gives us the edge since we know what to expect when we go there."
