It All Comes Down to This For Falcons

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The entire swimming and diving season will be on the line as the Falcons travel to Akron for the Mid-American Conference Championships February 23 -25. Senior Stephanie Buckner will be in the water to defend her 100 Freestyle crown, while numerous other Falcons will pose dangerous threats to finish on the medal stands in both individual and relay events.
Junior Caroline Keating has set the pace for the Falcons recording the quickest times in the 200 (1:53.65), 500 (5:02.42), 1000 (10:29.86), and the 1650 Free (17:21.69) while also taking membership of multiple winning relay teams. Keating, who was named last season's team MVP leads BGSU in dual meet first place finishes.
Also in contention will be Dana Schultz as she ends her campaign as a Falcon. Schultz leads the senior class in first place meet finishes and has recorded the best times in the 100 (56.95) and 200 Fly (2:03.99). She is also a member of multiple winning relays.
Fellow senior Kara Ohngren has been consistent for the Falcons in her last outing in Orange and Brown. Ohngren has recorded top BGSU times in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke (1:07.25 and 2:27.89) while also scoring often in the distance Free events.
Newcomer Alisha Yee will given the Falcons another medal option in the sprint Backstroke events. Not only has she redefined her personal bests time in three separate events in her first year, but she also leads the team in both sprint Back events. First-time Falcon Sami Jordan will give Yee a run for a medal and will be a force in the Championships. Jordan's best 100 Back time trails Yee by less than a second.
Coach Keri Buff's team will also have a strong chance to see Top Five finishes from the dependable scoring efforts of Jessica Guinness (Free), Christina Vaca (Back and Breast), and Lisa Hipp (Free and Fly).
On the springboards, veteran Jill Auer and freshman Ashley Belrose will lead the Falcons in the one and three meter diving events. Belrose has recorded the highest marks in both events. Auer is just a few points behind in each event.
The action begins each day at 11 a.m. with a slate of preliminary heats followed by the championship rounds of each event beginning at 7 p.m. The diving events will take place on Thursday and Friday, with preliminary rounds beginning at 2:30 p.m.
This year will mark the 26th edition of the championship meet, with Miami University entering this season's event as the four-time defending champion. The Falcons finished fifth at the 2005 meet. The host school has placed in the top-three in two of the last four years with Miami winning the championship in its home pool in 2004.
Admission for the event will be $6.00 per session for adults and $4.00 for students and youths. Children under 5 years of age are admitted for free. All-sessions passes, which include heat sheets, are $30.00 for adults and $20.00 for youths and students. Individual heat sheets will be $2.00 per session while meet programs will be available for $4.00. Parking is free for the event.
