BGSU Squares Off Against Non Conference Opponents

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University gymnastics squad travels to Piscataway, NJ to compete in a five-team meet this Saturday (Feb. 25). They will face Rutgers, Rhode Island University, Towson State, and University of Bridgeport. The meet is scheduled to take place at 7:00 p.m. inside Livingston Gym on the campus of Rutgers University.
Last Week Against Western Michigan
The much-improved Falcons fell short last week as they traveled to Kalamazoo, Mich. where they lost 187.325-190.100 to Western Michigan University, who is undefeated in the Mid-American Conference. Junior Allison Swafford and senior Jessica Guyer led the Falcons.
Guyer had a day of seasonal bests as she recorded a 9.775 on the vault and a 9.825 on the floor. She would go on to finish second on the vault and first on the floor. Swafford also recorded a seasonal best on the floor as she followed up Guyer with a 9.725 placing her in third.
Other standouts for the Orange and Brown was Jessica Bradley (9.425) flipping her way to a third place finish on bars and tying her seasonal best. Jholeen Ponce would shine in the beam as she recorded a 9.525 notching her in second place.
A Look At The Scarlet Knights
Last weekend Rutgers fell in a tri-meet against Maryland and Pittsburgh. Maryland won the meet 193.075, followed by Pittsburgh 191.150, and Rutgers 191.050. The Scarlet Knights are led by freshman Latara Northcutt averaging 9.609 on the vault and 9.591 on the bars. Junior Lorena Johnson runs the beam averaging 9.528, while Beth Fittery is the leader on the floor with 9.622. The last time the two squads met was in 2000. BGSU won the meet 193.950-192.825. Overall the Scarlet Knights are leading the series 2-1.
A Look At The Rams
Last week, Yale University downed Rhode Island, 187.900-190.350. The Rams were led by junior Kelly Gurney who finished second in the all-around posting a score of 37.950. Senior Melissa Todd (9.750) notched a second place finish on the floor. In 1990 the Falcons got the best of the Rams, 178.800-176.800. This is the only time these teams have met.
A Look At The Tigers
Last week at the Shelli Calloway Memorial Invitational Towson won the meet with a 192.775. They defeated George Washington, Cornell University, Temple University and Ursinus College. Junior Christina Ghani swept all four events and finished first in the all-around with a career high 39.200. Sophomore Decelia Willacy tied for second on the beam with a 9.525 score. The Falcons have faced the Tigers twice and are 0-2. The last time the two teams met was back in 1999 with Towson edging out the Orange and Brown 193.350-194.400.
A Look at The Purple Knights
The last time Bridgeport was in action was on Feb. 11 when they finished fourth out of five teams in the Big Red Invitational. They scored a 179.025 in the finish behind winner, Towson who scored a 190.850. Taylor Rut tied for third on the beam landing a 9.500, while Brandy Embry lead the way on the bars sticking a 9.450. BGSU has never faced Bridgeport.
Schedule Reminder
After the meet Saturday the Orange and Brown will continue their road tour as they will travel to Kent State to face the Golden Flashes on Friday March 3 at 7:00 p.m. inside the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center.
