Trio of Swimmers Earn Academic All-MAC Honors

Bowling Green State University trio Jessica Guinness, Kara Ohngren and Dana Schultz were selected as Academic All-MAC Team members. This is the second consecutive season in which the three were honored for their work in the classroom and in the water.
Schultz recently closed her campaign as a Falcon with a third place finish in the 200 Butterfly at the Mid-American Conference Championships The senior is a biology major who will leave Bowling Green ranking third in the 100 and 200 Fly all-time career times list. She was also honored as a second-team All-MAC selection.
Guinness' legacy will include participation on two record-breaking relay teams. Saturday, Guinness, along with Caroline Keating, Jennifer Wright and Stephanie Buckner, broke the 800 Free Relay record with their 7:33.30 finish. Last season, Guinness, along with Buckner, Lisa Hipp and Schultz not only broke the 200 Free Relay record, but also earned bronze medals at the same time. The senior is a biology/pre-med major with a perfect cumulative GPA. She was selected as the Rhodes Scholarship candidate for the University.
Ohngren, an All-MAC second-team honoree, will leave the Orange and Brown ranking second in the 400 IM, third in the 1000 Free, fourth in the 1650 Free and sixth in the 500 Free on the BGSU all-time career times list. The print journalism major currently writes for the on-campus student newspaper.
First-time MAC Champion Eastern Michigan led the league in number of honorees, with six swimmers and/or divers being named to the squad. Second-place Miami followed with four selections to the team, while Akron, Ball State and Bowling Green each had three student-athletes elected. Ohio and Toledo each had two selections to the squad.
To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered.
