WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia - The road tour comes to an end but the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team fell short of a victory. The Falcons traveled to Williamsburg, Virginia where they were defeated by William and Mary 187.475-188.350. The Orange and Brown were led by junior Allison Swafford, who tied for second on vault with a 9.650, and ended second on the floor marking a 9.700.
The team opened the night on the bars where Jholeen Ponce shined as she flipped her way to a 9.475 and a fourth place finish. Freshman Jenna Wirtanen and senior Jessica Bradley both tied for sixth place with scores of 9.325.
Over on vault, the Falcons best event, Swafford guided the squad with her second place finish, while Jessica Guyer landed a 9.625 to claim forth. Jillian Stranges rounded out the top five with her skills landing her a 9.575. Wirtanen set her career best as she recorded a 9.525. Heading to the floor the Orange and Brown saw themselves behind by 1.250.
On the floor the team excelled, as five Falcons finished in the top seven. Swafford again guided the team as she placed second with a 9.700. Jillian Stranges finished fourth flipping to a 9.600. Erin Coudriet recorded her first top five finishes as she tumbled to a 9.575. She was followed by Marissa Saneholtz, who set a career best of 9.425. Ashlee deLeeuw made her first debut on floor with a score of 9.350 and a seventh place finish. Heading into the last event the Falcons cut the lead to only .625.
The beam, which seems to be the event that makes or breaks the Falcons, saw only one team member in the top sixth. Jessica Bradley showed why she was a co-captain, and led by example finishing third with a 9.375. Freshman Katie Follett set a career best as she stuck a 9.300 and tied for sixth. While on the beam the Orange and Brown watched the win slip away as they fell behind the Tribe's Brittany Gibbs who took first on floor with a 9.800.
This match up ends the Falcons road meets, and they will return home for senior night this Friday March 17 to host Mid American Conference opponent Eastern Michigan. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. inside the Eppler Gym. The team will then head to Kalamazoo, Mich. to compete in the MAC championship.
