BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Falcons fall to 6-5 on the season after dropping both games of a double-header against Holy Cross and the Valparaiso contest on Friday. Despite the losses, Junior Josh Stewart shined by going 3-for-4 with a homerun and three RBI in the double-header.
Holy Cross jumped all over the Falcons early with seven runs in the first two innings of game one. Stewart stroked a four-bagger in the third to put Bowling Green on the scoreboard. Freshman Chris Gacom hit his first homerun as a Falcon, a two-run shot in the eighth that cut the lead to 13-4, which ended as the final score.
Sophomore southpaw Dan Horvath pitched well for Bowling Green, hurling three scoreless innings, allowing just three hits.
BGSU rebounded early in game two, taking a two-run lead into the bottom of the third, but that's where things went wrong. The Crusaders tallied six hits and seven runs in the home-half of the inning to take a 8-3 advantage.
The Falcons countered the following inning with two more runs, the product of a two-RBI Stewart triple, shaving the Falcon deficit to only three runs. Unfortunately, Holy Cross scored one run in each of the next three innings to take a 11-5 lead. BGSU managed to score another run in the ninth, but eventually fell to the Crusaders, 11-6.
Bowling Green looked to get back on track Friday morning against Valparaiso (also the Crusaders). Junior Kurt Wells's two-RBI double and a squeeze bunt by Senior Dash Yost gave the Falcons a 3-1 lead, which lasted until the eighth inning. However, a hit batsmen mixed with some bloop hits for the Crusaders led to a 4-3 come-from-behind win for Valpo, handing the Falcons their fifth straight loss after starting the season 6-0.
Junior Alan Brech continued his strong season by lasting six innings and allowing a lone run while scattering six hits. Senior Tyler Wasserman had a strong performance, compiling three hits. Sophomore Nick Cantrell falls to 2-1 after suffering the loss in relief.
The Brown and Orange close out their spring break trip in Bradenton, Florida this Saturday (Mar. 11) morning with a 10:30 a.m. matchup versus St. Francis College.
