WACO, Texas - Chelsi Lake hit a pair of homeruns and drove in all three Baylor University runs, as the nationally-ranked Bears rallied for a 3-2 win over the Bowling Green State University softball team Saturday night (March 4). The game, part of the Compass Bank Invitational, was held at Getterman Stadium.
With the win, Baylor improves to 15-5 on the year, while the Falcons fall to 6-4 on the season and 0-4 on the weekend. BGSU has been outscored by a total of just five runs in this weekend's four games to date.
Lake opened the scoring with a leadoff homer in the top of the second inning, but the Falcons rallied with a pair of runs in the fourth.
In that inning, sophomore Allison Vallas drew a leadoff walk against BU starter Brittany Turner, and took second on a passed ball. Freshman Hayley Wiemer followed with a single to leftfield, BG's first hit of the game, with Vallas forced to hold at second. Then, after a grounder by senior Lindsay Heimrich resulted in a fielder's choice and a putout at third, Turner got freshman Desiree Miller to ground out as well. On Miller's grounder, the runners moved up to second and third, but there were now two outs.
Sophomore Dawnjene DeLong, however, followed with a grounder which resulted in an error, and both Wiemer and Heimrich came in to score, giving the Brown and Orange the lead.
Senior Gina Rango had a two-out double in the fifth inning, and took third on another BU error, but was stranded there.
In the Baylor half of the sixth inning, Harmony Schwethelm singled with one out, and Lake hit a two-run homer with two down, giving the Bears a 3-2 lead.
Wiemer singled and stole second in the bottom of the inning, and the freshman took third on classmate Miller's infield hit. But, reliever Lisa Ferguson came on and got a fly ball and a groundout to end the inning. Ferguson retired the side in order in the seventh to pick up the save.
Each team had four hits in the game, with Wiemer going 2-for-3 with a stolen base for the Falcons. Rango and Miller had the other BG hits.
Lake, of course, had two hits for the hosts, scoring twice and driving in all three of her team's runs.
In the circle, Turner got the win, allowing two unearned runs and four hits in five-and-a-third innings. Ferguson earned the save after facing five batters and retiring them all.
Vrabel took the loss to drop to 3-3. The senior allowed just four hits in six innings of work, striking out six batters without issuing a walk. Wiemer, who began the game in rightfield, pitched a one-two-three seventh inning, with one strikeout.
The Falcons conclude play in the Compass Bank Invitational with a pair of Sunday (March 5) games. BGSU will face Washington at 9:00 a.m. CST (10:00 a.m. Eastern) and Mississippi State at 1:00 p.m. CST (2:00 p.m. Eastern).
