BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green (16-14) felt defeat for the first time at home in 2006 after a ninth-inning heartbreaking loss to Dayton (17-13). The Falcons led 9-8 heading into the last inning, but gave up six runs in the top of the ninth to fall 14-9.
The Flyers rode three homeruns that hung up in the windy conditions just enough to clear the fence in taking a 5-0 lead after five and half innings.
BGSU responded in the bottom of the fifth by notching eight runs. Five different Falcons recored at least one RBI in the inning, including Sophomore Andrew Foster's three-RBI double off the center field wall. The Bowling Green, Ohio was just a few inches shy of hitting his second grand slam in as many games against Dayton this season.
Dayton fought back and knotted the score at 8-8 two innings later. UD's two-run seventh was the product of a two-run shot by Galen Schumm, his second homerun of the game.
Junior Josh Stewart began the bottom of the inning with a single down the left field line. After a Tyler Wasserman lineout, Foster knifed a single through the right side of the infield, advancing Stewart to third. Two batters later, Freshman Brandon McFarland sent a sacrific fly to right field to regain the lead for Bowling Green, 9-8.
After a scoreless eighth inning, the Flyers accumulated five hits and six runs in the top of the ninth for a 14-9 edge. Unfortunately, the Falcons went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
Bowling Green gets back into conference action this weekend, beginning with a 3 PM showdown against the I-75 rival Toledo Rockets on April 14th. Friday's contest will be played at Warren Steller Field.
