BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Junior Ali Mann was named the Bowling Green State University women's basketball Player of the Year for the 2005-06 season, it was announced Saturday evening (April 22). The team was honored at the annual BGSU Women's Basketball Banquet, held at the Bowen-Thompson Student Union on the BGSU campus.
Mann, who was a co-POY honoree in 2004-05, earned the '05-06 award in a vote of team members. Junior Liz Honegger was named the team's Power Player of the Year, while classmate Carin Horne was honored as the Impact Player of the Year. Both players earned the same honors last season as well.
Junior Amber Flynn picked up the team's Most Improved Player award, while Horne and sophomore Kate Achter were co-recipients of the Playmaker-of-the-Year award. Senior Jill Lause garnered the team's Falcon Award, while sophomore Whitney Taylor was named BG's Student-Athlete of the Year, and senior Casey McDowell received the Fran & Marty Voll Award. Van Wright was named the women's basketball Booster of the Year.
Seniors Lause and McDowell each had the opportunity to share their thoughts, and the crowd was treated to a spectacular season video, courtesy of Julie Baker of BGSU Instructional Media. Additionally, the team's three freshmen, Lindsey Goldsberry, Jasmine McCall and Jessica McKenzie, each were presented with their letterwinner's jackets.
The 2005-06 Falcons, of course, won both the Mid-American Conference regular-season and tournament titles, and advanced to the NCAA Championships, also for the second consecutive season. The Falcons of head coach Curt Miller, associate head coach Jennifer Roos and assistants Brandi Poole and Kevin Eckert finished 28-3 overall, posting the most wins of any team in MAC history, and became the fifth-ever conference team to finish with a perfect mark, going 16-0 in league play.
