CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University senior Liz Vrabel has been named the Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon (April 3). Vrabel earns the honor for the second time this season and the eighth time in her Falcon career.
Vrabel, a native of Allison Park, Pa. (North Allegheny HS), had a 1-1 record with one save and an earned-run average of 2.10 last week. She had 19 strikeouts in 20 innings of work, and allowed opponents to hit just .179 against her.
Vrabel began her week by taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning in Wednesday's (March 29) game at Notre Dame. She wound up with a complete-game five-hitter in a 1-0, 11-inning loss to the Fighting Irish.
Two days later, Vrabel fired a three-hit shutout as the Falcons opened MAC play with a 1-0 win at Buffalo. In that game, Vrabel struck out 11 batters en route to her fourth complete-game shutout of the season. She took a no-hitter into the fifth inning of that game.
On Sunday (April 2), Vrabel picked up the save in a wild 7-6, come-from-behind victory at Kent State. She faced the minimum three batters to lock down the win.
On the year, Vrabel has a record of 10-5 and a 1.64 ERA. She has allowed opponents to bat just .172 against her.
Vrabel was named the MAC East Division's Pitcher of the Week, while KSU's Jessica Toocheck earned Player-of-the-Week honors in the East. Ashley Strauss of Eastern Michigan and Krysten Shumaker of Western Michigan picked up Player- and Pitcher-of-the-Week honors, respectively, for the West Division.
The Falcons, 21-10 overall and a perfect 4-0 in MAC play, open the week with a Wednesday (April 5) doubleheader at Ohio State, before returning home for four MAC matchups this weekend. The Brown and Orange will face Akron in a Friday (April 7) doubleheader, before playing single games vs. Ohio on Saturday and Sunday (April 8-9).
