BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team recorded a season-high 21 hits Wednesday afternoon at Warren E. Steller Field in a 16-3 rout of IPFW. The 16 Falcon runs were also a season-best as the Falcons improve to 7-0 at home this season.
Five BGSU (15-11) pitchers combined to give up just two earned runs on seven hits and no walks. Freshman Marty Baird picked up his first collegiate victory throwing three innings, allowing just one unearned run.
Leading the way offensively was junior Eric Lawson who recorded three hits, including his first homerun of the season. He also had three RBI. Both Josh Stewart and Tyler Wasserman picked up four hits apiece, while Wasserman had three RBI and Stewart picked up a pair.
The first five batters in the Falcons' lineup went 14-for-22 with 10 runs scored and 11 RBI.
Bowling Green's biggest frame was a six-run sixth inning. Lawson air-mailed a three-run shot over the right field fence to begin the scoring. Junior Jeff Telmanik tacked on two more runs later in the inning with a single up the middle to hand the Falcons an 11-1 edge.
BGSU added five more runs the next two innings to make the final score, 16-3. Junior Kurt Wells picked up his team-leading 18th RBI with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
The Falcons have had no problem grabbing an early lead during the current six-game winning streak, scoring at least one run in the first inning in every game.
Bowling Green dives back into conference play with a three-game series at Central Michigan this weekend. The Falcons and Chippewas get the series started on Friday, April 7th at 3 PM in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.
