TOLEDO, Ohio - The weather didn't want to cooperate with the women's track team, but that didn't matter. The Falcons finished seventh out of twelve teams on the final day of competition at the 2006 Outdoor MAC Championships.
The seventh place finish is the team's highest since 1999, where the team finished sixth.
Head coach Scott Sehmann, who will not return after the completion of the outdoor season, was very pleased with the team's performance throughout the three-day event.
"I am very happy for the team," said Sehmann. "They really put forth the effort and it showed and now everyone else can see what we as a team have been seeing all a long about how we can perform."
Saturday's action saw several Falcons shine in their events. The sprinting team of Jessica White and hurdler Nicole Standback really came through for the team. White crossed the 100-meter line in third place to claim the bronze medal in a time of 11.86 seconds. Standback too finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.03 seconds.
White and Standback teamed up with teammates Lyndi Springer and Lacey Cochran to win their heat of the 4x100-meter relay in a season best time of 46.80, to finish seventh overall.
Another third place medal came in the form of a thrower in Bowling Green's very own Whitney Hartman in the discus with a toss of 143-01.00. Hartman had already claimed the bronze medal in the weight throw on Thursday.
Jamie Roflow was the Falcons highest placed finisher this weekend. She placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday in a time of 10:27.37. On Saturday, she came back to finish second in the 5,000-meter run, in a personal-record 16:43.54. For her finish, she was named to the second team All-MAC list.
Friday's action saw Kim Settle finish sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a new personal-best time of 11:05.09, placing her third on the all-time steeplechase list. Rounding out the top eight in the event Stephanie Hillman, who, after running the 10,000-meter run last night, came back and finished eighth in the steeplechase with a new personal-record of 11:30.03.
Thursday's action saw junior Andi Bunko finish fifth in the javelin throw with a distance of 41.13 meters. Senior Alyson Lee finished eighth with a distance of 35.96 meters.
Sehmann also made note that all but one point (Alyson Lee's eighth place javelin finish) came from athletes who will return to the team for the 2006-2007 season.
With their highest place in seven years, the team will now disband and spend the summer preparing for the next year.
"I am so proud of them and wish I could be here to see them succeed as a team next year, because I know they are going to be even better next year," said Sehmann.
