Guinness Named Second-Team Academic All-American

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior Jessica Guinness continues to be recognized for her success as a student-athlete after earning membership on the 2005-06 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's At-Large Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
With the recognition, she becomes just the second Falcon swimmer to be named to the second-team Academic All-American squad. Jen Jarjosa received the award in 2001.
Guinness was one of just three MAC selections to be named to the second team.
The senior is a biology/pre-med major with a perfect cumulative GPA and was one of nineteen in the field of forty-five with the distinguished accomplishment.
Prior to Thursday's announcement of her selection, Guinness was granted first-team All-District honors in May.
She was selected as the Rhodes Scholarship candidate for the University and is a two-time Academic All-MAC Selection. Additionally, she was named the female Senior-Scholar Athlete of the Year at the annual BGSU Scholar-Athlete Banquet.
The Sylvania, Ohio, native along with Caroline Keating, Jennifer Wright and Stephanie Buckner, broke the 800 Free Relay pool record with their 7:33.30 finish in February at the 2006 MAC Swimming and Diving Championship. The foursome finished third.
In 2005, she was a member of the record breaking 200 Free Relay team, which earned the bronze at the MAC Championships.
She will also graduate ranking 5th in the 100 free, 9th in the 50 free and 10th in the 200 free on BGSU's Top Swimmers List.
The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA (the College Sports Information Directors of America), a 2,000 member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
The women's at-large program for Academic All-America includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, golf, gymnastics, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, and water polo.
To be eligible, a student-athletes must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the programs inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
