Bowling Green, Ohio - For the first time since Bowling Green State University joined the MAC in 1953, the Falcons will have six Division I home games during the non-conference portion of their schedule. The Falcons also will play six times away from home with contests at Arkansas State, Wright State and three games at the Wisconsin-Green Bay Tournament.
"Scheduling is something that is a lot more difficult than it looks," said BGSU Men's Basketball Coach Dan Dakich. "We think the way our schedule is set up this year it will have us ready when the MAC season rolls around in January."
BGSU will host an exhibition against Capital on November 8. The Falcons will open the regular season at home November 11 against Denison. BGSU begins a home-and-home series at Arkansas State on November 16 and returns home to face Furman on November 19. BGSU will host Sun Belt Champion and NCAA Tournament South Alabama on November 25 and face another Sun Belt foe at home, Troy, on December 2. Arkansas State will come to Anderson Arena on December 4 and the Falcons take on Central Arkansas on December 9.
Following a break for finals, BGSU visits Wright State on December 16, hosts Northern Colorado on December 19 and plays at Marshall on December 22. BGSU will end the non-conference portion of the schedule with three games at the Wisconsin-Green Bay Tournament.
"Traditionally, our kids have spent a lot of time on the road toward the end of the first semester," said Dakich. "Having the ability to play at home against this type of competition will help our kids not only on the court, but academically as well. This also allows our fans to see our team on a consistent basis prior to the start of conference play."
The Falcons will begin conference play on January 7 when they host Buffalo. The league will now consist of a 16-game schedule which will have each team play within its division twice and outside of its division just once. BGSU will only play arch-rival Toledo on the road on February 3. In addition, all 12 league teams will advance to Quicken Loans Arena where the MAC Tournament will be held March 7-10.
"Going to Cleveland and Quicken Loans Arena is a big deal, said Dakich. It's something that I think we needed to do as a league. All of the leagues that are considered the quote, unquote great leagues in the country do that. There is a spectacle about playing the MAC Tournament in Cleveland that everybody enjoys. The 16-game schedule is interesting. It has made scheduling more difficult, but the university presidents, athletic directors and coaches determined that getting a second bid to the NCAA tournament was our goal. The way we were doing it (an 18-game schedule) wasn't getting it done, so something had to be done about that. The 16-game schedule allows us to schedule more Division I non-conference games and allows for us not to beat up on ourselves."
