First and Ten
BGSU and Kent State will meet for the 74th time since 1920 this Saturday. BGSU holds a 52-15-6 lead in the most-played series for the Falcons and have won the last five meetings overall and the last 15 contests at Doyt L. Perry Stadium dating back to 1972. Since 1985, the teams have battled for the Anniversary Award, which recognizes that both institutions were founded in 1910.
The Falcons lead the MAC in rushing offense (245.3), scoring (31.7), pass defense (135.7) and fewest sacks allowed (4). The Falcons are seventh in the country in rushing and 19th in total offense (424.7).
Redshirt freshman quarterback Freddie Barnes is the top rushing quarterback in the nation (109.0) and is fourth in the country in scoring (12.0). Sophomore linebacker Erique Dozier is 14th in the country in tackles, while sophomore cornerback Kenny Lewis and freshman free safety Jerett Sanderson are tied for the MAC lead and are 13th in the country in interceptions with two.
The Falcons scored its first defensive special teams touchdown since 2002 when Loren Hargrove forced a fumble and Sanderson scooped the ball up and went nine yards for the score against Florida International.
Sanderson also had two interceptions in the final three minutes to stop go-ahead drives by the Golden Panthers. For his efforts, he was named MAC East Defensive Player of the Week. Barnes was named MAC East Offensive Player of the Week earlier this season for his 158 yard rushing effort against Wisconsin.
In its last two home games, BGSU played a triple overtime game against Buffalo which it won and a double overtime game against Toledo which it lost. With its win at Florida International, BGSU has won its last four road games dating back to last year (Buffalo, Kent State, Miami and Florida International).
Last year, the Falcons posted their fifth straight winning season with a 6-5 record. BGSU was nationally ranked in one or both major polls in 2002, 2003 and 2004. They finished 24th in the final BCS poll in 2003.
The Falcons boast one of the youngest teams in the country having played 24 true or redshirt freshmen. Fourteen players have made their first career start this season.
BGSU's .714 winning percentage since 2001 (45-18) is the best among all MAC schools over the last five years.
The Golden Flashes snapped an 11-game losing streak when it won at Miami last weekend, 16-14.
