CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The University of Wisconsin picked up a 35-14 victory over the Bowling Green State University in the 'Clash in Cleveland' Saturday night (Sept. 2). The game, the season opener for both teams, was held at Cleveland Browns Stadium. To follow are a few notes from the game ...
* In his first collegiate game, BGSU redshirt freshman Freddie Barnes rushed for 158 yards on 29 carries, scoring both Falcon touchdowns ... Barnes' total set the school record for rushing yards in a game by a BG quarterback ... the old mark was 148 yards, set by Josh Harris in a win at Ohio on Nov. 10, 2001.
* Barnes, on the second play from scrimmage of the game, rushed up the middle for 17 yards on his first career carry.
* Barnes' first pass attempt was a completion to Sean O'Drobinak for 12 yards later on that opening drive.
* Pete Winovich had his first career carry on the eighth play of that opening drive, a four-yard carry that gave BG a first down ... nine of the Falcons' 10 plays on that opening drive were running plays.
* Barnes capped that drive with a 21-yard touchdown run, giving the Falcons a 6-0 lead. On the drive, Barnes had five carries for 49 yards.
* It marked the second-straight year that BG has scored on the opening drive of the season.
* Sean Ellis made his first collegiate appearance on the next play, successfully converting the extra-point try for a 7-0 BG lead.
* Wisconsin tied the score on the Badgers' opening drive ... on UW's second drive, the Falcons held on downs, taking over at their own 4-yard line ... Cody Basler had the defensive stop on the Badgers' fourth-down rush.
* Zach Charles had his first career reception early in the second quarter, a 4-yard catch from Barnes.
* Devon Parks had a sack of UW quarterback John Stocco in the second quarter, for an 11-yard loss ... the sack was the 14th of Parks' career.
* Drew Nystrom recovered a teammate's fumble in the second quarter.
* Kenny Lewis intercepted a Stocco pass in the end zone with 4:36 left in that quarter ... the interception was the second of his career ... that pass was deflected by P.J. Mahone prior to Lewis picking it off.
* On the next play, Chris Bullock had the first rushing attempt of his career, gaining two yards.
* Six players made their first career start for the Falcons ... on offense, WR Zach Charles and QB Freddie Barnes made their initial starts ... defensively, five Falcons started for the first time -- DE Jacob Hardwick, LB John Haneline, FS Jarrett Sanderson, SS P.J. Mahone and CB Kenny Lewis.
* Players that saw their first action of their respective collegiate careers included Alonso Rojas, Tarell Lewis, Jahmal Brown, Kevin Colyer, Chris Bullock, Sean Ellis, Cody Basler and Trevor Frericks
* A crowd of 30,307 watched the game, the first-ever collegiate football game held in Cleveland Browns Stadium.
* Pete Winovich rushed for 16 yards out of a punt formation early in the third quarter, giving the Falcons a first down ... the gain was the longest of his BG career, in his first game as a fullback ... Winovich had 20 yards on two carries on the night.
* The Falcons put together a 16-play, 79-yard drive in the third quarter, capped by a Barnes 1-yard run ... during that TD drive, Barnes went over the 100-yard mark on the ground for the game ... he is the first Falcons quarterback to eclipse the century mark on the ground since Josh Harris gained 138 yards on Oct. 12, 2002, at Central Michigan ... and, as mentioned, he went on to set the school record for rushing yards by a QB in a game.
