BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team began the 2006-07 year on a successful note, posting a 3-1 record in a tournament at Carter Park in Bowling Green over the weekend (Sept. 16-17). The Falcons blanked Ashland, 5-0, and sandwiched wins over Detroit (3-2) and Ohio Dominican (9-4) around a loss to Toledo (4-3).
"We would like to have won all four games," said assistant coach Susan Sargent. "However, we are pleased with our effort and performance over the weekend. Our top priority was to get every player, especially our freshmen, some valuable experience in game situations, and we were able to accomplish that goal."
One of those freshmen, Susan Sontag, had a stellar weekend at the plate, going 8-for-15 in the four games. Another member of the Falcons' freshman class, Sharon Palma, picked up a pair of saves.
In the Ashland game, sophomore Hayley Wiemer picked up right where she left off last spring. Wiemer, the 2006 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, combined with Palma on the shutout and was 3-for-3 at the plate. Sontag and junior Dawnjene DeLong each had two hits in four at-bats.
In the circle, Wiemer had six strikeouts en route to the win, while Palma whiffed two Eagle hitters on her way to the save.
Junior Allison Vallas went 2-for-3 in the win over Detroit, while classmate Emily Gouge picked up the victory. Palma again had the save.
Toledo rallied for a 4-3 win over the Brown and Orange, despite a 2-for-3 performance from freshman Carly Riepenhoff. Wiemer (four innings) and Palma (one inning) saw work in the circle in the game, which was just six innings long due to time constraints.
The Brown and Orange capped the tournament with an extra-innings win over ODU. The game was tied, 1-1, at the end of seven innings, but BGSU put a six-spot on the board in the ninth. Sontag had three hits in five at-bats in that win, while senior Jeanine Baca was 2-for-4 in the victory. Wiemer got the win in relief of Gouge.
"Our newcomers really stepped in and did a great job this weekend," said Sargent. "Everyone, including newcomers and returnees, contributed to our success."
The Falcons' next fall action will come Sept. 30-Oct. 1, when BGSU heads to Columbus to compete in the Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic at Ohio State's Fred Beekman Park.
