Falcons Pick Up 21-9 Win at Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University football team went on the road and picked up a 21-9 win at Ohio University Saturday afternoon (Sept. 30). A few notes from the Mid-American Conference game at Peden Stadium ...
* The Falcons now have won five consecutive MAC road games. BGSU went a perfect 4-0 in conference road contests a year ago.
* Overall, BGSU has won five consecutive road games and the Falcons are 2-0 on the road this season.
* BGSU now leads the series with Ohio, 35-21-2, and the Brown and Orange have won five consecutive meetings vs. the Bobcats.
* Freshman Chris Bullock had the first triple-digit rushing game of his young BGSU career. Bullock had a total of 114 yards on the ground vs. the Bobcats. Coupled with his 99-yard total vs. Kent State last week, Bullock now has a total of 213 rushing yards over the last two games after entering that KSU contest with a career total of 22 yards.
* Freddie Barnes, in his first playing season, has scored two touchdowns four times in his five games. Barnes had two rushing scores at Ohio, and now has a total of eight TDs (seven rushing, one receiving) in his year career.
* Senior wide receiver Ruben Ruiz's wife, Rebecca, gave birth to a 6-lb., 2-oz., son, Ruben Isac, this (Saturday) morning at 5:30 a.m. Ruiz was with the team at the time of his son's birth.
* The Falcons had a season-high four sacks and totalled nine tackles for loss. Sophomore DE Diyral Briggs had a career-high two of those sacks, and forced a fumble by Ohio QB Austin Everson in the third quarter. That fumble was recovered by sophomore DB Antonio Smith.
* For Briggs, the fumble forced was the first of his career, and the fumble recovery was the third of Smith's tenure at BG.
* Briggs has four sacks this season and 10 in his BGSU career.
* BGSU scored on the team's first drive of the game for the fourth time in five contests this season. The Falcons were 2-for-2 on fourth-down conversions during that drive, including a six-yard run by freshman punter Alonso Rojas on a fourth-and-5 play.
* Also on that opening drive, Bullock picked up a 30-yard gain on fourth-and-2, giving BG a first-and-goal at the four-yard line. The 10-play, 69-yard drive culminated with Barnes' first TD of the day.
* Freshman Jahmal Brown had the first interception of his collegiate career.
* Sophomore QB Anthony Turner started the game after sitting out the Kent State contest due to injury.
* Barnes' second rushing TD of the day gave the Falcons a 14-3 lead.
* After the Bobcats cut the BG margin to 14-9, the Falcons responded with a 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive. BGSU was 2-for-2 on third-down conversions on that drive, including a Turner-to-Barnes 19-yard pass play and an eight-yard run by Bullock.
* The big play on that drive was a pass by sophomore Corey Partridge that was complete to Barnes for 31 yards, putting the Falcons in business at the Bobcats' five-yard line. Bullock took the ball the rest of the way on the next play, scoring his first collegiate TD.
* Junior Loren Hargrove intercepted an Everson pass with under a minute to play in the game. It was the first pick of his career.
* Barnes caught a career-high four passes for 68 yards, including the career-long 31-yarder from Partridge. Barnes also rushed for 37 yards and the two TDs.
* Senior LB Terrel White, the top tackler in the MAC, had 13 stops, while sophomore John Haneline and Brown added eight tackles each.
* Fifth-year senior Kenneth Brantley made his first career start, as did junior fullback Pete Winovich.
* BGSU held a team scoreless in the first quarter for the first time this season. In doing so, they hold the Bobcats to just 54 yards in 16 plays.
* Senior DT Brad Williams had his second sack of the season and sixth of his career.
* The Falcons did not allow a touchdown in a half for the first time since playing at Buffalo last season.
