BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Head coach Cami Wells will get her first test as head coach this Saturday as the women's track and field team opens the season with the BGSU Women's Invitational. The Falcons will host Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne, and Miami in the five team meet.
The Falcons are coming off a very strong showing at last year's Outdoor MAC Championships with their highest finish in almost seven years. They also hope to carry the momentum from the cross country season where the team finished second, their best since 1998 when the Orange and Brown won the championship.
They have spent all fall practicing for the opening of the track season and will get their first test of how strong they truly are on Saturday. Coach Wells has been very pleased with the way training has been going and expects to see good things come from the team not only on Saturday but throughout the season as well.
"I am very happy with the team and how they have prepared themselves this fall," said head coach Cami Wells. "Coach Roberts and Coach Carvalho did a very nice job of keeping the athletes motivated to train through the fall semester. The athletes have worked hard and everyone is ready to start competing."
The tracksters return all but one athlete who contributed in scoring at last year's outdoor championships and should see many other athletes rise to the occasion throughout both the indoor and outdoor season.
Last indoor season, Jamie Roflow, Nicole Standback, Erica Wilson and Jessica White placed in the MAC Championships as well as the outdoor championships. The Falcons also saw Wilson, Roflow, White, Standback, Andi Bunko, Kim Settle, and Stephanie Hillman score at the outdoor championship and expect to see big things come out from them as well.
"I expect to see positive things from every athlete this season," said Wells. "We were led at the 2006 indoor MAC meet by Jessica White, Nicole Standback, Erica Wilson, & Jamie Roflow and I would expect them to once again lead the way for the team as we begin our 2007 indoor season. There have been several other Falcon track and field athletes who have been impressive during the fall including throwers Takarra Dunning, Lauren Bryant and Paris Bussey who threw very solid marks at our Orange vs. Brown meet, redshirt freshman sprinters Shantel Lewis and Crystal Burage are running well and ready to go. Middle distance runner Yemoja Morotta has had a great fall and distance runner Kim Settle is coming off a very successful cross country season and looks ready to have her best indoor season yet, she will be joined by Kara Butler and Carly Bates who have also looked very strong. And finally we have Kristen Carver who will be competing in the combined events and looks to make an impact there this season."
The meet will start at noon with the field events and the running will begin at 1 p.m.
