CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University women's basketball senior Ali Mann has been named the Mid-American Conference's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week. The announcement was made by the league office on Thursday (Jan. 11).
Mann, a native of Chelsea, Mich. (Chelsea H.S.), averaged a team-high 17.0 points along with 4.5 rebounds per game as the Falcons posted a pair of wins to open the MAC season. She had a game-high 24 points, including 18 in the first half, in BG's 75-42 win over Buffalo on Saturday (Jan. 6). In that game, Mann single-handedly outscored the Bulls, 18-15, in the first half of play, and hit seven field goals to UB's team total of six in the first 20 minutes.
Mann's performance vs. UB came after she had 10 points in BG's 61-32 win at Akron to open the MAC schedule (Jan. 3). She tied for game rebounding honors with six in the UA contest.
Also last week, Mann became just the fourth player in school history to surpass the 1,500-point mark for her career. After Wednesday's (Jan. 10) Falcon win over Kent State, Mann now has 1,519 career points. She also has 774 career rebounds to rank in the BGSU top-10 in that category as well.
After the win over KSU, Mann is now averaging a team-high 15.7 points along with 4.2 rebounds. She ranks third on the team in rebounding and second in assists (2.7 apg), while leading the Falcons in three-point field-goal pct. (.528, 19-for-36). Overall, she is shooting .564 from the field this year to date.
Mann, a supply chain management major, maintains a 3.43 cumulative grade point average (Note: grades through the fall semester were not available at the time of nomination).
The Falcons are now 13-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the MAC, and BGSU is ranked 18th in the nation in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Top-25 polls. The Falcons head to Athens for a Saturday (Jan. 13) game vs. Ohio University. Tipoff is at 4:00 p.m., and according to Ohio's athletics web site (ohiobobcats.com), all tickets for the game are $1 apiece.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to one MAC male and one female student-athlete each week. Candidates must be of sophomore standing or higher, have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better and have performed well during the prior week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
