BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Freshman forward Dan Sexton and senior forward John Mazzei both tallied hat tricks, as the Bowling Green State University hockey team defeated the University of Windsor, 12-1, in exhibition play Friday night at the BGSU Ice Arena. A total of 17 Falcons found the scorer's sheet, including four players with at least three points or better on the night, as the Falcons scored 12 goals in a game for the first time since a 12-1 exhibition win over Toronto (Oct. 15) in 1993.
Sexton, who tallied two points for the Falcons in the Falcon "Face-off" a week ago, finished his night with four points, while Mazzei (3-2--5) finished tied for a game-high five points with sophomore forward Tomas Petruska (1-4--5). A total of eight wearing the brown and orange were able to find the net, while nine others dished out the assists.
"I was really proud with how we played tonight and kept our feet moving throughout the game," head coach Scott Paluch said. "I thought a lot of guys chipped in production wise and we got a lot of guys acclimated to college hockey tonight, while keeping the minutes each one was on the ice to a minimum."
"Everyone was a factor tonight and I think that was the most impressive thing about the game for us," Paluch continued. "We want to be a confident group and now we just need to maintain this confidence we have."
The confidence was booming early on for BG, as they came out fired up and ready to put up some points, as they led 4-1 after the first intermission.
Getting things started just 1:36 into the game was Sexton, as he took a pass from Petruska and made a nice deke-move in the slot to beat Lancer goalie Jim Watt, to give the Falcons the early lead. Fellow freshman forward Patrick Tiesling, would add BG's second goal at the 9:14 mark, before Mazzei struck with his first goal of the night on the Falcon power play to make it 3-0 just 11:27 into the contest.
Windsor's Alex White then would get the lone Lancer tally of the night, just 24 seconds later, as he beat junior Jimmy Spratt on a shot from just outside the left circle at 11:51 to bring the Lancers within two. However, the Falcons and Sexton would counter-back as the Apple Valley, Minn. native collected his own rebound and found the net at 16:16 to stretch the BG lead back to three.
The Falcons would then go on cruise control for the rest of the game, as they collected four more tallies in the second period to stretch their lead to 8-1 entering the final period of play. Mazzei started things off in the second just 1:13 in, while sophomore James Perkin would add his lone goal of the night at 5:43 to open up the lead to 6-1.
After collecting three assists through the first 32 minutes of play, Petruska finally found himself on the front-end of the scoring list, as he collected BG's second power play goal at 12:59 on great puck movement from Mazzei and junior defenseman Kevin Schmidt to make it 7-1. Finally with just six seconds remaining in the second frame, Sexton would finish off his hat trick with a nice unassisted short-handed breakaway goal as the Falcons continued to pour it on.
The scoring wouldn't end there though, as BG tallied four goals yet again in third period. Freshman forward David Solway opened the third with the third power play goal of the night for BG, as he found the net from the left side of the crease. A series of three goals in just a 2:03 span would then put the Falcons well into double digits for the night. Red-shirt junior defenseman Tim Maxwell and sophomore defenseman Kyle Page scored on the opposite ends of Mazzei's third goal of the night at 13:15, as the Falcons scored 10-plus goals for the 52nd-time in their 38-year history at the BG Ice Arena.
BG finished the night 3-7 on the power play, while their penalty-kill held the Lancers to 0-9 on the evening. All three Falcon goaltenders saw action on the evening, as Spratt finished his night with eight saves in 30:41, while freshman Nick Eno and sophomore Phil Greer combined to make six saves, keeping the Lancers scoreless in 29:21.
The Falcons would out-shoot the Lancers 48 to 15, as they've now out-scored them 26-3 in the last three meetings.
BG will hit the ice again for the start of the regular-season on Thursday when they head to New York to face Niagara. The Falcons and Purple Eagles will face-off at 7:05 p.m., before BG closes out their trip at RIT the following night, also with a 7:05 p.m. start time. Both games can heard on WBGU 88.1 FM.
