BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Junior Corbie Yee's goal in the second overtime gave the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Ohio University Friday afternoon (Oct. 26). The Mid-American Conference match was held at BGSU's Cochrane Field.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 7-9-1 overall and 4-5-0 in MAC play, while the Bobcats drop to 4-9-3 and 4-4-1, respectively.
"This was another hugely emotional result for us today," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "It is a great result against another very good team. We have managed to pull out two double-overtime victories in a row now [BGSU won at Miami, 1-0, on Sunday], and it is a testament to the quality and the determination we currently have in our program.
"Ohio is a team that we have traditionally struggled against, so it really is a great reflection of how hard we had to work today."
Freshman Katie Stephenson picked up the assist on Yee's goal, which came at the 104:53 mark. Redshirt freshman Alexa Arsenault had three saves to earn her second consecutive shutout.
The winning play came after a pair of Falcons missed connections on a pass deep in the Ohio end of the field, with the ball rolling over the end line for a goal kick. That Bobcat GK was stolen by Stephenson about 40 yards out, and the freshman played a forward pass to Yee, splitting two defenders. Yee, in all alone, made no mistake, with her shot, burying the ball in the lower left-hand corner of the net and sparking a BGSU celebration as darkness began to descend on Cochrane Field.
"I am delighted for everyone in the program," said Richards. "As we prepared to begin the second period of overtime, I encouraged the team to believe and to be brave. I think we managed to capture both of those qualities.

"I am thrilled for Corbie Yee for getting the game-winning goal, for the defense for getting the shutout, for everyone involved in the program and for our fans. It was a great victory today, a thoroughly-deserved victory, and we are very happy with this result as we battle for positioning within the MAC standings."
The game ended with a goal from Yee, but the junior nearly began the contest with a goal. On an overcast, windy day at Cochrane Field, a giveaway by the Bobcats' defense in the first minute gave Yee the ball with only Ohio goalie Jess MacLean between her and the net. But, the Falcon striker's shot attempt was right at MacLean, who was able to make the save.
Yee, who led all players with four shots on the day, had the game's second shot attempt as well. With nearly eight minutes gone, and several defenders running with her, Yee fired a shot from 22 yards out, but the ball whizzed just over the crossbar.
Junior Brianne Eisenhard had the next chance for the Falcons. Off a corner kick by senior Danielle Cygan, the ball came to Eisenhard at the top of the 18-yard box. She tried to place a shot into the lower-left corner, but an OU defender was able to block the shot in the game's 15th minute.
The Falcon defense held Ohio without a shot until nearly 39 minutes had elapsed. After a BGSU foul, the visitors' Lindsey Price blasted a curving free kick from more than 30 yards out, but the shot sailed just high.
In the second half, Ohio's Erika Schmitt had a grade-A chance in the early going, but Arsenault was able to leap and punch the ball away. That play came with 39:41 left in regulation, just a minute or so after rain led to the day's first appearance of an open umbrella in the crowd.
Several minutes after Schmitt's shot, Falcon soph Stacey Lucas got off a hard shot at the other end of the field. Lucas, with a defender shadowing her, still was able to uncork a hard shot, but MacLean was able to make a diving save.
With just under 20 minutes left in regulation, OU's Halle Plagens saved a ball on the end line and slid a cross to Schmitt, who was stationed with her back to the net, only a yard or so away from the near goalpost. But, Falcon sophomore defender Colleen Kordan was able to displace Schmitt before she could make a move or get a shot off, and the Falcons cleared the ball out of danger.
With seven minutes left in regulation, three Falcon frosh -- Meagan Moran, Jackie Tamerlano and Stephenson -- were able to string together six or seven passes in the Ohio end of the field. The sequence ended with a shot by Stephenson, but the ball sailed just wide of the left post.
One minute later, a defensive miscue by the Bobcats resulted in Falcon striker Kristin McDonald and MacLean racing for a 50-50 ball in the penalty box. MacLean was able to get to the ball a split-second before MacDonald, and the OU 'keeper got a boot on it. Her clearing try deflected off MacDonald, but an Ohio defender was able to get to the resulting carom and clear the ball from the danger area.
The only shot on goal of the first overtime came off the head of Moran in the final minute, but the Falcon freshman, in traffic, was not able to get much force behind her shot, and MacLean grabbed the ball out of the air.
In the second OT, Yee had the only two shot attempts, with the first going wide and the second sending Falcon fans home happy. The home team had a 13-5 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 margin in shots on goal.
Arsenault, as mentioned, had three saves, while MacLean was credited with five stops on the afternoon/evening.
The Falcons conclude the home portion of the regular-season schedule with a Sunday (Oct. 28) match vs. the University of Akron. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., with 'Senior Day' festivities prior to the game.

Stephenson's first career goal was a Golden Goal on Sunday (Oct. 21) at Miami, giving BGSU a 1-0 double-OT win ... then, the Falcon frosh picked up the assist vs. Ohio, with her pass that split two Bobcat defenders and found an open Yee.

* The Falcons are now 2-8-1 in the all-time series with Ohio, and BG is now 2-4-0 in home matches against the Bobcats ... BGSU now has a two-match home winning streak over OU, as the Falcons' only other series victory was a 2-0 decision in the teams' previous meeting at Cochrane Field (Oct. 7, 2005) ... a Falcon freshman named Corbie Yee scored the winning goal in that contest.
