CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University junior Kristin McDonald has been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Women's Soccer Team, the league office has announced. The team, which is the result of voting by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions, was announced Friday (nov. 16).
McDonald's selection to the team is the first of her career. She maintains a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average as a health science major.
McDonald, a native of Troy, Ohio (Troy H.S.), played in 15 matches this season, making one start. She had two assists on the year, coming in games vs. Youngstown State and Central Michigan. McDonald was also taken down in the penalty box, with the foul leading to the penalty kick that tied the game and helped the Falcons to a win over Western Michigan.
Earlier in November, McDonald was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV University Division Women's Soccer Team, earning second-team honors.
A total of 26 student-athletes were named to the team. The number of honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team are the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
McDonald was one of just three student-athletes on this year's Academic All-MAC Team with a perfect 4.00 GPA.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
The Falcons of head coach Andy Richards finished the season with an overall record of 10-9-3. BGSU placed fourth in the final MAC standings with a 6-5-0 league record, and advanced all the way to the championship match of the MAC Tournament for the fourth time in the last five years. The Falcons finished the season with a seven-game unbeaten streak, going 5-0-2 in that span.
