DeLong, Vallas, and Wiemer Named 2007-08 Softball Captains

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - BGSU head softball coach Shannon Salsburg announced the naming of seniors Dawnjene DeLong and Allison Vallas and junior Hayley Wiemer as the 2007-08 softball captains. The three captains were elected by a team vote.
"I think their diverse personalities and leadership styles will help the team continue to grow and thrive in the upcoming season," said Salsburg.
DeLong, a Hamilton, Ohio native, started all 45 games for the Falcons last season. She earned second team All-MAC honors and was named BGSU Defensive Player of the Year for her performance at shortstop with a fielding percentage of .957 and only six errors on 139 attempts. Last season DeLong hit a .267 with 32 hits, including six doubles, one triple, and six home runs one of which was a grand slam against Western Michigan in game one of the MAC Tournament.

Vallas, a Perrysburg, Ohio native start all 45 games for the Falcons between duties at first base and in the outfield. In her junior campaign she was garnered with first team All-MAC honors, Academic All-MAC honors, ESPN the Magazine All-District honors, and BGSU co-Offensive Player of the Year. Vallas, hit a .369 totaling 48 hits and 31 runs. She was second on the Falcons in home runs (9), RBIs (36), doubles (10), and slugging percentage (.699). On defense Vallas recorded a .982 fielding percentage with six errors on 329 chances.
Wiemer, a Sylvania, Ohio native, will captain the Falcons for the second year in a row. As a sophomore last season she was named first team All-MAC, National Fastpitch Coaches Association Louisville Slugger Great Lakes All-Region team, ESPN the Magazine's All-District first team, BGSU's Most Valuable Player and co-Offensive Player of the Year, MAC East Division Player of the Week, and a MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week twice. Wiemer led the Falcons on the hill with a record of 17-5 and 9-3 in the MAC with a 1.45 ERA, allowing 48 runs, 11 walks and recording a team high 152 strikeouts in 159 innings. At the plate Wiemer led the Falcons hitting a .413 with 52 hits including 39 RBIs, 11 home runs, and nine doubles. She recorded a new BGSU single-season home run record with a two-run homer against Eastern Michigan in the MAC Tournament.
"DJ, Hayley, and Allison are great examples of what it means to be a student-athlete here at BGSU," said Salsburg. "They have seen success in the classroom, and have been important pieces in the success of the program in recent years."
Opening day for the Falcons will be February 22, 2008. The Falcons will once again travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. for a three-day tournament hosted by University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The Orange and Brown look to defend their back-to-back championships and open the 2007-08 season with a bang.
