Bowling Green State University women's basketball head coach Curt Miller
Talk about your first time out there this season ...
"I am pleasantly shocked with how we played tonight. We are growing as a team and everyday we are trying to get better. I was really pleased by our effort and energy tonight. I think our young freshman got a burst of energy seeing those five graduates [the Class of 2007] back who were such a huge part to our recent success. We still have a long way to go, a lot to get better on, but I can not wait to get to the film room tomorrow to see the good and the bad that came from tonight.
"Tonight you saw two teams who had tremendous senior classes. They are replacing 3,500-plus points while we are replacing 5,900-plus points. That team is very well coached by one of the best in the country, and we knew we were going to get a disciplined team tonight. We were going to have to beat them, they we not going to beat themselves. The difference tonight was they had too many turnovers. Both teams shot the ball very well; fortunately we were able to capitalize on the turnovers. I was really proud of our kids in all the production that we got."
Talk about the individual performances ...
"We are going to challenge Lindsey [Goldsberry] to be aggressive all year. I was hard on her in practice ... I was really pleased on how well she played. Lauren Prochaska came back and had a great game too. Our starting freshmen [post players] did not have a great shooting night, but they played well. They played a very good post player in Sarah Ott, and held their own."
Talk about the defense...
"Valpo runs in constant motion - they screen everywhere. In order to have a team effort tonight there needed to be a lot of communication out there. There also needed to be a lot of pressure on the ball because we knew that we would be in bad position at times because they were such a good screening team. I think our ball pressure really helped us. We didn't force them to shoot at that percentage [42.9%]; however we did force them to turn the ball over enough to enable us to win tonight."
Talk about Kate Achter...
"We survived her foul trouble; it always scares you when your leader is in foul trouble and sitting on the bench. ... She has done a great job getting people involved. Even though she gets penetration she has to make that pass and tonight she passed it out to Lindsey [Goldsberry] and Lauren [Prochaska] and they played really well. Lauren is going to play better. Mark my words Lauren is going to continue to improve, and I can't wait to see her blossom over the next four years."
Freshman Guard Lauren Prochaska
What was it like to come out and have success in your first real game?
"We were all excited for our first game tonight. I didn't shoot too well in the exhibition game, so I give credit to the coaches and my teammates for having faith in me."
How was seeing the pre-game ceremony?
"It was awesome to see. It gave me jitters because hopefully that's where we want to be in four years. It gives us something to shoot for."
Talk about your defense ...
"The coaches did a great job in showing us what plays they were going to run. We were able to get in the passing lanes and anticipate what they were going to do, which allowed us to run the field and get some easy points."
How does it feel to come in to a program that went to the Sweet Sixteen last year?
"You never know what's going to happen, and I just came in here wanting to play hard. I want to do the best I can, and I think we all played well tonight."
Junior Guard Lindsey Goldsberry
How did you manage to break their defense tonight?
"I give credit to our point guards because they did a great job penetrating and bringing the defense in. That allowed me to set up for my threes and through great passes I was able to hit my shots."
Talk about your defense as a team tonight ...
"We worked hard all week in learning what would be coming. As a team we are learning to play together as team defense, help side, on the ball, off the ball, and we are just coming together well as a team. That is being shown in our defense.
"We always feed off our defense. Once we get our defense going it helps the offense be able to get out and run and get some easy shots. We build momentum that way and that's where I think our strength comes from."
What does being a leader out there show the young kids on the team?
"It shows them what is expected out of all of us. They did a great job coming in and stepping up in their first college game. We expect nothing less then going all out and playing hard, and leaving it all on the court.
"I thought we did a great job all together coming out and being in sync. There are times where we needed to settle down, but I feel like we did a good job coming together and settling down when we needed to."
What's it like having a whole new team this year?
"It is really different having a full roster out there. It helps to have depth and knowing that we can run people in and out. Tonight it showed how everyone was able to contribute to the team."
