TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Quoting Bowling Green State University men's basketball head coach Louis Orr after Saturday's game at Indiana State University ...
(Opening statement)
"We competed and got back into the game late. We showed some fight and resolve late in the second half, but we shot ourselves in the foot with too many turnovers. I give Indiana State credit, at the beginning of the second half they made shots and it seemed like we couldn't get the stops that we needed. We struggled, but we kept fighting. We've got a team that is trying to develop and build its identity, and it is a work in progress. We've just got to continue to work hard and play better."
(You mentioned the stretch at the beginning of the second half. Did you feel like that gave Indiana State some confidence?)
"Well, I tell you what - Stinson's mid-range pull-ups really hurt us. He really hurt us in the zone, and Gabe Moore also hit some big shots for them. In the first half, we had some (defensive) possessions that went to late in the shot clock, but then we let them get some offensive rebounds. We shot ourselves in the foot a couple times, but I thought we did a better job of that later in the game.
"But, when you're on the road - or at home - you've got to take care of the ball, and you've got to make your free throws. I think we missed four straight free throws, and maybe five out of six during that stretch. When it was 55-50, I think we went to the line twice. If we make all four free throws, it's a one-point game. Those are the things we have to do better.
"Otis Polk was very active today. He did a great job on the boards, and he posted up big. But, we don't get too the free-throw line a lot, and to go 3-for-9 (as a team) hurts in a game like this. We have to do a better job of somehow creating fouls and getting to the line. That's been a concern during the course of the year."
(It seemed like you were able to do a good job of creating some offense late in the game.)
"I was happy with our response. We had had a turnover and they scored (to go up by 12 points). You look at the game to that point, and at a time like that, you hope your guys don't throw in the towel, and they certainly didn't. We did a little bit of fullcourt pressure, we scrapped and we generated some offense off of our defense. We kind of got our momentum going a little bit. This may not have been a pretty game, but you had two teams that were scrapping and battling. I think you saw two teams that are still trying to find themselves. This is one of those games that may not have been very pretty, but you just want to come out of it with a win, and Indiana State was able to do that."
